A Brutal Attack and a Fight for Survival: The Harrowing Ordeal of Sara-Jane
The smiling faces of children posing with Santa Claus often bring a heartwarming glow, a snapshot of pure joy. For Joanne Smidt, seeing such a picture posted by her niece, Sara-Jane, on Facebook was a moment of bittersweet reflection. Sara-Jane, a resilient young woman of 32, had faced a life marked by profound hardship from its very beginning. Born prematurely and weighing a mere 450 grams, her early years were shadowed by the tragic loss of her mother to cirrhosis of the liver at just 16, a consequence of years of drug and alcohol abuse. Furthermore, Sara-Jane had navigated through tumultuous relationships, managing to escape each one, a testament to her inner strength and unwavering spirit.
Despite these immense challenges, Sara-Jane possessed a fighting spirit. She held onto hope for a brighter future and strived to live her life to the fullest. Her aunt, Joanne, 63, from the Central Coast of NSW, recounts the chilling events that shattered Sara-Jane’s world, a stark reminder of the darkness that can lurk in unexpected places.
One day, Sara-Jane confided in Joanne about her neighbour’s new girlfriend, Krystal. Her description painted a picture of someone potentially troublesome. “She smokes ice and I think she’s a bit of a troublemaker,” Sara-Jane had shared, admitting she was trying to maintain a cordial relationship with Krystal. She even mentioned Krystal occasionally walking her dog, Ruby, and accepting food or shelter when needed. Joanne, sensing potential danger, urged caution, her unease amplified by the knowledge that Sara-Jane’s neighbour had previously shown a persistent romantic interest in her.
The normalcy of their lives was violently disrupted on July 4, 2023. Joanne awoke to a distressing voicemail from Sara-Jane’s aunt, Krista. “Sara-Jane’s in hospital. She’s been attacked,” the message chillingly conveyed. A wave of cold dread washed over Joanne. She immediately contacted her brother, Brett, Sara-Jane’s father, and rushed to John Hunter Hospital.
The sight that greeted Joanne in the Intensive Care Unit was devastating. Sara-Jane lay unconscious, hooked up to a multitude of wires, her face a mask of brutal injuries, bruised and swollen. Tears welled up as Joanne noticed a pad attached to her bandaged head, bearing the stark inscription: “No bone.” A gasp escaped her lips, a wave of nausea rising in her throat.
Sara’s brother, Jake, who was already present, provided the horrifying details. Sara-Jane had been found unconscious on the floor by her friend Bruce, who had been staying with her. He had come downstairs around 10:20 am to discover her with a severely caved-in skull, her brain exposed, and bleeding profusely. Miraculously, her young sons were not at home at the time, staying with their father. The attack had been carried out with a hammer while Sara-Jane slept on the couch, explaining why Bruce hadn’t heard any disturbance.
Joanne’s immediate concern shifted to Ruby, her niece’s loyal dog. “What about Ruby?” she asked, her voice trembling. “She would’ve attacked someone hurting Sara.” Jake confirmed that police had found Ruby at Krystal Begg’s house. Krystal had initially tried to claim the dog was hers, but Bruce had informed the authorities that this was untrue.
When Joanne inquired about Krystal’s arrest, Jake shook his head. “She’s denying she had anything to do with it,” he explained, “And there’s not enough evidence to charge her.”
For the next two weeks, Sara-Jane remained in a critical condition, unconscious and on life support. Joanne and Brett made daily trips to the hospital, enduring agonizing uncertainty as doctors could not predict whether she would survive.
Meanwhile, the police provided an update: Krystal had been arrested in connection with another incident, where she had broken into a home armed with a knife. “Animal,” Joanne exclaimed, appalled. “She needs to be locked up.” This time, Krystal was charged with the offence and remanded in custody.
Initially, Krystal continued to deny her involvement in Sara-Jane’s brutal attack. However, after a month, she finally confessed, admitting she had acted out of jealousy because Sara-Jane had slept with her boyfriend. Her subsequent statements to the police were chillingly callous. Krystal expressed her devastation that Sara-Jane had not died, stating, “Well, I got to have a bit of fun, I got to cave her skull in, didn’t I. Spewing it didn’t happen properly, devo’d, considering what I did it for.” She chillingly added, “And trust me if I get out, she’s going to be dead. I plan on having a hell of a lot more fun and that’s that.” These sickening words underscored the depravity of her actions.

As the court case loomed, Joanne focused her energy on Sara-Jane’s recovery. While she was eventually taken off life support, she spent three arduous months in intensive care. Surgeons had to insert a titanium plate to replace her shattered skull and fitted her with a shunt to drain excess fluid from her brain. The next stage of her journey involved a move to a rehabilitation unit, where she began the painstaking process of relearning basic functions.
The recovery was slow and agonizing. Even after regaining consciousness, Sara-Jane seemed distant, as if a part of her was missing. Joanne found solace in the fact that Sara-Jane had no memory of the attack. As she became more alert, Sara-Jane expressed a desire not to know the details, simply stating, “I just want to get better.”

The physical toll of the attack was immense. Sara-Jane was left completely paralysed on her left side and had limited movement on her right, rendering her wheelchair-bound. The likelihood of her ever walking again was grim. She required constant 24-hour care, struggling with even the simplest tasks like cutting her food or showering independently. Her ability to raise her sons was tragically compromised, though their visits brought her immense comfort, their loving “Love you, Mum” a balm to her wounded spirit.
In February 2025, Krystal Lee Begg, then 31, was sentenced to 13 years and six months in prison for charges including grievous bodily harm with intent to murder. Watching Krystal sit expressionless in court, seemingly indifferent to the life she had shattered, deeply affected Sara-Jane. The fear of Krystal’s eventual release gnawed at her. “When she gets out, she’ll kill me,” she confided in Joanne. “We’ll worry about that later,” Joanne reassured her, “You’ve got 13 and a half years to live your life.”

Sara-Jane is now determined to reclaim her life, harbouring a deep desire to walk again. She currently relies on a specialised machine to help her stand and exercise her weakened muscles. Joanne and her family are actively fundraising to purchase this vital equipment. Sara-Jane now resides in supported accommodation, and Joanne frequently takes her out for shopping trips or lunches at the local leagues club. While it’s a far cry from her former life, Joanne witnesses glimmers of Sara-Jane’s beautiful personality re-emerging each day. Her niece’s resilience is a powerful testament to the fact that even in the face of unimaginable tragedy, a heart of gold can refuse to be extinguished.
