Aussie Youth Shun Europe: High Costs Bite

Europe’s allure as a global travel hotspot might be facing a slight chill in 2026, with a new survey indicating a potential dip in overseas visitors. The primary culprits behind this projected downturn appear to be mounting affordability concerns, a burgeoning inclination towards domestic or nearby getaways, and the perennial constraint of limited vacation time. Young travellers, in particular, are voicing significant apprehension about the high costs associated with visiting the continent. This raises a crucial question: what strategies is Europe employing to ensure it doesn’t price out an entire generation of aspiring adventurers?

The Rising Tide of Cost: A Hurdle for Young Explorers

A recent report, the European Travel Commission (ETC) and Eurail’s Long-Haul Travel Barometer 1/2026, paints a somewhat subdued picture for long-haul travellers eyeing Europe from seven key international markets. These markets include Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, South Korea, and the United States.

The survey’s findings are telling: a notable 42% of respondents are contemplating a European sojourn in 2026. While this figure might seem substantial, it represents a 3% decrease compared to the previous year. For those not planning international travel, the reasons are clear. The most significant deterrent cited is the prohibitive cost of travel, with a substantial 52% pointing to high expenses. This is closely followed by a growing preference for exploring their own backyards.

Affordability consistently emerges as the foremost obstacle for many considering a trip to Europe, with a significant 43% of respondents highlighting this issue. This concern is amplified among younger demographics, specifically those aged between 18 and 34.

On a more positive note, the continent’s long-standing reputation for safety continues to be a powerful drawcard. Safety has ascended to become the leading criterion for selecting a European destination, influencing the decisions of 51% of respondents – a marked increase from previous years. The report substantiates this, positioning Europe at the apex globally across all safety dimensions. This includes robust political stability, a high degree of personal safety, and effective management of natural hazards.

Charting a Course for Accessibility: Making Europe Welcoming for Younger Generations

Eduardo Santander, CEO of the ETC, acknowledges the validity of these concerns. “Affordability is clearly a concern, particularly for younger travellers, and it would be worrying if rising costs created structural barriers to travel,” he stated in a discussion with Euronews Travel.

Santander emphasises that Europe’s inherent strength lies in its unparalleled diversity. This richness translates into a broad spectrum of price points, varied transportation options, and a wide array of accommodation styles, catering to different budgets and preferences.

He further elaborates, “Younger travellers are adaptable and value-driven, and while they are more sensitive to cost, they remain highly motivated to travel. The key is ensuring Europe continues to offer accessible pathways to meaningful experiences.”

To achieve this, Santander suggests that destinations should pivot their focus from merely reducing prices to actively creating value. This involves a more nuanced approach to attracting and retaining younger visitors.

Strategies for a More Accessible European Adventure

Several key strategies are being put forth to make Europe a more attainable and appealing destination for younger travellers:

  • Encouraging Off-Season Travel: By promoting travel during shoulder and off-peak seasons, destinations can offer lower prices and a less crowded experience, appealing to budget-conscious travellers.
  • Enhancing Affordable Rail Connectivity: Investing in and promoting efficient and affordable rail networks across the continent can provide a sustainable and cost-effective way for travellers to explore multiple destinations.
  • Supporting Youth-Oriented Accommodation: The development and promotion of hostels, budget hotels, and other accommodation options tailored to the needs and budgets of young travellers are crucial.
  • Promoting Experiences Beyond Major Hotspots: Shifting the focus from overcrowded tourist traps to lesser-known regions and authentic local experiences can offer more affordable and unique opportunities.

Santander also highlights a significant trend: younger travellers are increasingly prioritising destinations that align with their values. This means that sustainability, inclusivity, and equality are becoming more influential factors in destination choice than specific attractions or well-trodden experiences.

He points out a synergistic relationship between sustainability and affordability: “Importantly, sustainability and affordability can align: longer stays, slower travel and deeper local engagement not only reduce pressure on peak destinations but also enhance the overall visitor experience for younger travellers.” This approach encourages a more immersive and enriching travel experience, which often proves to be more economical in the long run.
