Eze Strikes Twice as Arsenal Clinch Crucial Derby Victory
Eberechi Eze delivered a performance to remember, scoring two vital goals in Arsenal’s dominant 4-1 derby triumph over Tottenham Hotspur. The brace not only secured a significant win but also helped to ease the mounting pressure on his side’s Premier League title aspirations. This victory came at a crucial juncture for Arsenal, who had experienced a recent dip in form, and it propelled them to a commanding lead at the top of the table.
The attacking midfielder had been relatively quiet in front of goal since his impressive hat-trick against the same opposition back in November. However, Eze chose the perfect moment to rediscover his scoring touch, netting in both halves of the London derby. He was joined in the goal-scoring charts by Viktor Gyokeres, who also bagged a brace, as Arsenal extended their advantage over second-placed Manchester City to a comfortable five points.
The match itself was a tale of two halves, with Arsenal initially asserting their dominance. Eze opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a well-taken volley. His goal, however, was quickly cancelled out just two minutes later by Randal Kolo Muani, who capitalised on an uncharacteristic error from Arsenal’s Declan Rice. The equaliser momentarily shifted the momentum, but it proved to be a temporary blip for the Gunners.
The second half saw Arsenal regain control, and Gyokeres was instrumental in restoring their lead. Shortly after the interval, he unleashed a superb curling effort that found the back of the net, putting Arsenal firmly back in command. Eze then sealed the victory with his second goal, a simple tap-in, which provided his team with much-needed breathing room. Gyokeres completed his impressive individual performance with a late strike in stoppage time, capping off a comprehensive win.
This hard-fought victory propelled Arsenal to 61 points from 28 matches. Manchester City, who have played one game fewer, remain on 56 points. For Tottenham, the match marked the first outing under new manager Igor Tudor. The result leaves them in a precarious 16th position in the league, a mere four points above the relegation zone.
Title Race Nerves Eased by Dominant Display
Recent results had cast a shadow over Arsenal’s title ambitions. Consecutive draws against Brentford and a struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers side, particularly the latter where they surrendered a two-goal lead, had sparked fears that they might falter in their pursuit of a first Premier League title since 2004. The pressure intensified following Manchester City’s victory over Newcastle at the weekend. Consequently, a visit to a Tottenham side enduring a dismal run of form – having not secured a league win in 2026 – suddenly appeared a far more challenging prospect than initially anticipated.
Despite their poor league form, Tottenham did display flashes of the resilience that new manager Tudor had promised. They managed to create some anxious moments for the Arsenal defence throughout the match. However, Eze’s decisive brace ultimately ensured that Mikel Arteta’s men could breathe a collective sigh of relief.
Arsenal had started the game strongly, dominating possession and creating early chances. Gyokeres came close to opening the scoring before Eze showcased his athleticism to volley past Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario from a Bukayo Saka cross that had bounced up invitingly.
Tottenham, however, were unexpectedly handed a lifeline. A moment of hesitation from the usually dependable Declan Rice in his own penalty area allowed Randal Kolo Muani to dispossess him and drive the ball past David Raya, sending the home supporters into a frenzy.
Second Half Surge Seals the Deal
Following a rather unusual delay to the start of the second half, attributed to a technical issue with the match officials’ communication systems, Tottenham had an early opportunity through Xavi Simons. However, Arsenal quickly reasserted their authority.

Viktor Gyokeres, whose goal-scoring form has finally begun to flourish, was afforded too much space to control a pass from Jurrien Timber before firing a right-footed shot past Vicario. This strike re-established Arsenal’s lead and marked a pivotal moment in the game.
Eze, who was reportedly close to signing for Tottenham before his lucrative move to Arsenal, continued his impressive record against his former potential suitors. He added his second goal of the match, and his fifth in two games against Spurs, with a close-range finish following some lax defending, much to the dismay of the home crowd.
By the time Gyokeres struck for his second and Arsenal’s fourth goal in stoppage time, the travelling Arsenal faithful were already in full celebratory mode.
Arteta Praises Squad’s Resilience
Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, reflected on his team’s performance and their ability to bounce back from recent setbacks. “That’s football,” Arteta commented. “When you watch the game back against Wolves, how they held us back, nobody can explain it. But that’s the beauty of it. It looks like it is the end of the world and you look at your players, how they react and how much they want it.”
He continued, expressing his pride in his squad: “I am privileged to work with them every single day. I knew we were going to react. The attitude that we showed today, the dominance and the desire was really impressive.”
Arteta was confident in his team’s ability to respond to the pressure. “I knew immediately after the Wolves match (that the players would respond) because when it is a job, you don’t react like that. When it is your passion and you love the game so much, that’s something else and it hurts in a different way.”

The Premier League title race remains a compelling contest, but this emphatic derby victory has provided Arsenal with a significant boost, both in terms of points and morale.
