Aussies stunned by cup clash singles loss

Australia’s Fight for Survival in Billie Jean King Cup

Australia’s team captain, Sam Stosur, remains optimistic about her team’s chances of overcoming a difficult start in the Billie Jean King Cup qualifying tie in Melbourne. Despite losing both opening-day singles matches, Stosur believes the team can still turn the tide and secure their place in the Finals in China later this year.

The Australians faced a tough challenge from the outset, with their leading player, Talia Gibson, suffering a surprising defeat against British teen Mika Stojsavljevic. Gibson, who was expected to provide a strong start to the tie at John Cain Arena, fell 7-6 (7-4) 7-5 to the lowly-ranked 17-year-old. This loss came as a major setback for the home team, especially considering Gibson’s recent form and her position as the top local player following an injury to Maya Joint.

Kimberly Birrell, another key player for Australia, also struggled in her match against Harriet Dart. Birrell was unable to level the score after falling 4-6 6-3 6-3 to the 173rd-ranked Dart. The loss left the experienced pair of Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez with the crucial task of winning the doubles match on Saturday to keep Australia in the tie.

Stosur expressed confidence in Hunter and Perez, stating that they could help turn the match into a tight contest. She emphasized the importance of the best-of-five format, which allows teams to recover from early setbacks.

“I absolutely believe in Storm and Ellen to hopefully get tomorrow’s doubles match going in our favour to really make it a real tight tussle,” Stosur said. “It’s best of five for a reason so we’ve got players on our side that all of us believe in, and tomorrow is going to be all about that.”

Gibson, ranked world No.56, had been in excellent form leading up to the tie, having recently beaten five top 20-ranked players and reaching her career-high ranking. However, she struggled against Stojsavljevic, who delivered a powerful performance with 12 aces in the match.

“It’s my first time playing a match in the Billie Jean King Cup for Team Australia, so there was obviously some nerves out there today and not the way I would have liked to have played and not the result that I would have liked to have had,” Gibson said. “Credit to Mika, she came out playing really well, served amazing, so I did my best with what I was able to bring today, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough.”

Birrell showed promise in her match against Dart, taking the first set before losing momentum. The pair exchanged breaks in the third set, but Dart managed to break again to lead 4-3 and remained untroubled from that point onward.

Dart will partner Jodie Burrage in Saturday’s doubles match, with the reverse singles scheduled for later in the day. The outcome of these matches will determine whether Australia can continue their campaign in the Billie Jean King Cup.
