BBC Police Thriller Axed Amidst Rave Reviews, Fans Devastated

BBC Axes Acclaimed Thriller ‘Virdee’ After Just One Season, Leaving Fans Disappointed

Fans of gripping crime dramas have been dealt a significant blow with the BBC’s decision to axe the highly praised thriller Virdee after its inaugural six-part series. Despite receiving rave reviews and a dedicated following, the show’s viewing figures were deemed insufficient to warrant a second season, a decision that has left many viewers and the cast disheartened.

The series, which premiered in 2025, was an ambitious adaptation of A.A. Dhand’s best-selling crime novel series. Set against the backdrop of Bradford, West Yorkshire, Virdee followed Detective Chief Inspector Harry Virdee, portrayed by Staz Nair, as he navigated the complexities of a murder investigation targeting the city’s Asian community. The show also delved into the personal life of DCI Virdee, exploring the cultural and familial tensions arising from his marriage to Saima, a Muslim woman, which caused significant outrage within his Sikh family.

An insider reportedly told The Sun that there was considerable optimism surrounding Virdee, particularly due to its unique approach to the crime genre and its ability to cultivate its own audience. While specific primetime figures on BBC One averaged around 743,000 viewers per episode, the overall viewership, including BBC iPlayer, reached an average of 3.3 million. This broader figure, while substantial, was ultimately not enough to secure its future.

Staz Nair, who played the titular detective, had expressed his hope for a return to the series, stating his desire to embark on “another ride” with his castmates. However, this hope has now been dashed. A BBC spokesperson acknowledged the quality of the show, stating, “We’d like to thank Amit Dhand and the Virdee team for a brilliant series, we are really proud of the show.” The spokesperson also confirmed that the BBC is in discussions with Dhand about future projects, indicating a desire to leverage his storytelling talent elsewhere.

The ensemble cast of Virdee was a key element of its success. Alongside Nair, 34, and Aysha Kala, 35, the series featured a talented roster including Tobias Jowett as young Harry Virdee, Vikash Bhai as Riaz Hyatt, Danyal Ismail as DS Amin, Elizabeth Berrington as DS Conway, Sudha Bhuchar as Jyoti Virdee, and Kulvinder Ghir as Ranjit Virdee.

Author A.A. Dhand shared his perspective on adapting his novel into a television series back in February 2025, describing it as a “very natural progression.” He explained that he had always envisioned his novels with a strong visual element, writing them almost like screenplays. This inherent visual storytelling made the transition to adapting it himself a logical step. Dhand relished the opportunity to dissect and elevate his work for the screen, pushing the narrative even further. His lifelong ambition, nurtured by a childhood spent surrounded by films from a video library in his parents’ convenience store, was to work in screenwriting, and his novel provided the perfect entry point.

Critical Acclaim and Viewer Reactions

The critical reception for Virdee was largely positive, with the show earning a solid rating of 6.4 out of 10 on IMDb and a critical score of 63% on Rotten Tomatoes. This critical appreciation was echoed by viewers on social media platform X. Many users expressed their enjoyment and admiration for the series:

  • “#Virdee was brilliant. Gripping and thrilling and always amazing seeing Bradford on screen!”
  • “Thoroughly enjoyed #Virdee on BBC iPlayer. A tough & entertaining crime drama about a troubled Sikh cop. Set in Bradford. Brilliantly filmed, superbly acted & cracking storylines. Loved it.”
  • “That was brilliant. Loved everything about it and also, ABOUT TIME! Bravo all! #Virdee”
  • “Been a bit of a slow burner for me but enjoyed it, one more episode of #Virdee left and I hope it gets another series. Also, not been to Bradford for many many years and it actually looks quite nice now.”

However, not all reviews were glowing. Christopher Stevens of the Daily Mail awarded the show a more modest two out of five stars, indicating a divergence in critical opinion.

Despite the cancellation, Virdee remains available for viewers to stream on BBC iPlayer, offering a chance to catch up on the critically acclaimed thriller that captured the attention of many, even if it wasn’t enough to secure its continuation. The BBC’s interest in exploring future projects with A.A. Dhand suggests that while Virdee may be over, the author’s journey in television storytelling is far from complete.
