Billy Bob Thornton’s strange snack fix during health struggles

The Unexpected Snack That Changed Billy Bob Thornton’s Life

Billy Bob Thornton, the 70-year-old actor known for his role in Bad Santa, has found an unusual but satisfying way to enjoy snacking despite his strict dietary restrictions. His new favorite combination? Grapes dipped in Dijon mustard. This unexpected pairing came about as a result of his health challenges and creative approach to eating.

During a recent appearance on the Howie Mandel Does Stuff podcast, Thornton opened up about his health issues and the impact they have had on his diet. He revealed that he is allergic to wheat and dairy, and also has type AB negative blood, which is one of the rarest blood types globally. Less than one percent of the population has this blood type, and it comes with its own set of challenges when it comes to digestion.

Thornton explained that his blood type makes it harder for him to digest certain foods. In addition to avoiding wheat and dairy, he also cannot eat shellfish or any meat, including pork or beef. This means that finding suitable snacks can be a challenge, especially when attending events where food is often the main focus.

At a recent green room before a press event for Landman, a Western drama starring Thornton as oil executive Tommy Morris, he was disappointed to find a platter of food that he could not eat. The platter included deli meats, cheeses, and crackers—items that were off-limits for him.

However, Thornton found some white grapes that he could eat, but quickly grew bored with them. Looking for a way to add some excitement to his snack, he noticed some spicy Dijon mustard and decided to give it a try.

“I dipped this grape in the Dijon mustard. It was one of the best things I ever had in my lifetime,” he said, adding that it became a regular part of his snacking routine.

Thornton admitted that he had allergies while growing up in Arkansas and Texas, but he still ate everything. “I just assumed everybody felt like s*** after they ate. I didn’t know,” he said.

On the day of the podcast, Thornton had a simple breakfast of blueberries and decaf coffee. However, when he gets home, he enjoys more indulgent meals, such as gluten-free chips with dairy-free cream cheese. “Every now and then I’ll mix a little ketchup into it,” he added.

Earlier in the episode, Thornton shared a funny story about feeding Howie Mandel’s son, who is friends with his own son, a “hillbilly bagel.” This unique creation consisted of a bagel, cream cheese, and ketchup. “I make all kinds of junk like that because I don’t know how to cook,” he joked.

Despite his dietary restrictions, Thornton continues to find ways to enjoy food and even shares his unconventional recipes with others. His journey highlights the importance of adapting to personal health needs while still finding joy in everyday moments.
