Bolger & Cooper’s Irish Magic

Sarah Bolger Shines at IFTA Awards, Reflects on “The Lightkeeper” and Irish Talent

The 2026 IFTA Awards saw a dazzling display of Irish talent on the red carpet, with actress Sarah Bolger making a memorable entrance. Dressed in a shimmering Jenny Packham gown, the 34-year-old captured attention as she posed for photographers. Speaking about her new film, “The Lightkeeper,” Bolger revealed that her striking appearance was a deliberate nod to the iconic IFTA statuette itself.

The evening was a whirlwind for Bolger, who made a swift transition from the Dublin Royal Convention Centre, the venue for the awards, to RTÉ studios for an appearance on “The Late Late Show.” She was joined by her “The Lightkeeper” co-star, Dominic Cooper, for the television appearance. Despite the evening’s fast pace, Bolger took the opportunity to reflect on her career and the significant impact Irish talent is currently having on the global stage.

“The Lightkeeper”: A Glimpse into a Lighthouse Keeper’s Solitude

“The Lightkeeper,” a project close to Bolger’s heart, promises a compelling narrative. The official IMDb synopsis describes the film as focusing on Seamus, a lighthouse keeper whose life is governed by intricate rituals that isolate him from the outside world. His solitary existence is dedicated to awaiting the arrival of the mythical Each-Uisce. However, his carefully constructed solitude is dramatically disrupted by the arrival of three individuals who irrevocably alter the trajectory of his life.

Filming for “The Lightkeeper” took place against the stunning backdrops of County Mayo and County Donegal, with the unpredictable Irish weather playing its customary role. Bolger, a Dublin native, expressed her deep affection for Ireland during her interview, highlighting the unique experience of filming on home soil.

Filming “The Lightkeeper” in Ireland: A Magical Experience

“To be able to film at home, and to film in the rural countryside, to feel the wind on your face at that lighthouse while shooting some of the scenes – it was incredible,” Bolger shared. “It was almost magical. Ireland is arguably the most beautiful place in the world, and to film here with the crews, who are simply the best crews, it was truly special. I feel genuinely blessed to have been a part of this film.”

Bolger also revealed that “The Lightkeeper” holds a special significance as it marks her first venture into executive producing. “It’s actually the first project I’ve ever executive produced, so it just feels extra important, and I’m so proud to showcase it,” she stated.

The challenges of shooting in Ireland were not lost on Bolger, who humorously recounted the unpredictable weather patterns. “Our slight problem with filming was that we’d be filming in one direction, and it would be blistering sunshine, and then we’d switch, and the rain would just pour down,” she laughed. “So, it didn’t exactly help us with continuity, but that’s just the weather. What can you do?”

On Working with Dominic Cooper

Bolger also spoke highly of her co-star, the acclaimed actor Dominic Cooper. “He loves Ireland; I don’t think this was his first time here,” she commented. “He is just such an incredible joy to work with. He’s the kindest, most thoughtful person. He’s a man who truly shows up, and I’m so proud that I got to make that film with him.”

The interview provided a valuable insight into Bolger’s perspective on her career, her passion for her homeland, and the collaborative spirit behind “The Lightkeeper.” Her presence at the IFTA Awards underscored the growing international recognition of Irish talent in the film industry.

The evening’s festivities continued with numerous other Irish luminaries in attendance, celebrating a year of outstanding contributions to film and television.
