Bombers Skipper Confident in Team’s Future Amidst Merrett Contract Speculation
Newly appointed Essendon captain Andrew McGrath has expressed a lack of surprise regarding reports that star teammate Zach Merrett is in preliminary contract extension discussions with the club. This comes just months after Merrett’s much-publicised attempt to leave the club via a trade.
McGrath acknowledged that the off-season period was more tumultuous than anticipated. However, he believes the media sensationalised the situation, portraying a more dramatic scenario than what was actually unfolding behind closed doors at “The Hangar.”
“Day one of pre-season, there were a few awkward handshakes and a few gags, but after that, it was all business,” McGrath recently told SEN. “I’m not shocked. Knowing Zach, I think he needed to see a couple of changes. How it went down was turbulent and not how we all expected, but he’s committed and wants to win. He wants to win in red and black. That’s all we care about at this point in time.”

McGrath, who averaged an impressive 22.7 disposals per game in 2025 and was one of only four Bombers to feature in all 23 matches last year, offered his perspective on the situation. As a close friend of Merrett, he found himself in a unique position, aiming to support his mate while also safeguarding the best interests of the club he is so invested in achieving success with.
“Publicly, it’s really interesting, and we’ve had a lot of questions around what happened, but knowing Zach and our relationship, as soon as I got back from overseas and we spoke about it, it was a lot clearer,” McGrath explained. “I understood his point of view. He explained a few of his concerns around what was happening, our performance, and where he was at in terms of his career. I was in an interesting position as I’ll always support Zach as a person, and I know his family really well… but I also have a firm foot in the footy club’s camp around what was best for our footy club. That was keeping Zach, as our best player and leader. He still is.”
Despite the significant reshuffling of the Bombers’ leadership group, a move Merrett opted out of following his unsuccessful trade request, McGrath remains confident that the passion within the playing group at Tullamarine has not waned as they head into the 2026 season.
Leadership Evolution and Renewed Commitment
McGrath highlighted the immediate impact and spark that high-profile recruit Brayden Fiorini brought to the leadership discussions in December. He also pointed to the positive influence of younger players such as Sam Durham and Jye Caldwell, sentiments he reiterated on Monday.
“We’ve got a lot of senior players that are willing to speak and are passionate about the cause,” McGrath stated. “We’re all really committed to where we want to go and what we want to achieve. Our whole leadership group, as well as some senior players that aren’t in that, are really passionate about the direction of the footy club.”
The captain’s remarks suggest a club that, while navigating internal complexities, is unified in its pursuit of on-field success. The commitment from key figures like Merrett, coupled with the infusion of new energy and established leadership, points towards a resilient Essendon outfit ready to tackle the challenges ahead. The focus now shifts from off-field dramas to on-field performance, with McGrath at the helm, aiming to steer the Bombers towards a brighter future.
