Brisbane Eastern Suburbs: Burst Pipes Cut Water to Hundreds

Brisbane’s Eastern Suburbs Face Water Woes After Dual Pipe Bursts

Residents in Brisbane’s eastern suburbs are grappling with significant water disruptions following two separate burst water mains, impacting an estimated 900 properties. Urban Utilities is providing free bottled water and working around the clock to restore supply to affected homes in Tingalpa and Holland Park.

The incident on Wynnum Road in Tingalpa saw a major pipe burst around 11:45 am yesterday, leading to widespread flooding and bringing traffic to a complete standstill. By evening, the water had been shut off, revealing a substantial hole in the road surface. A second burst occurred on Abbotsleigh Street in Holland Park, compounding the supply issues.

Urban Utilities has confirmed that their crews are engaged in intensive repair efforts. “Our crews are working around the clock, but these are large pipes and complex repair jobs, so work will continue into this evening,” a statement from the water infrastructure provider read. “Some customers may be experiencing low pressure or no water while repairs are underway, and we apologise for the disruption.”

To mitigate the impact on the community, Urban Utilities is distributing free bottled water from 4 pm at Kianawah Park and Carmichael Park in Tingalpa. While repairs are in progress, the company is diverting water from other parts of its network to minimise the inconvenience for customers. However, drivers are being urged to exercise caution due to traffic impacts at both repair sites.

Investigating the Cause

The exact cause of the pipe bursts is still under investigation, and authorities are examining whether the two incidents are linked. Urban Utilities has stated that current industrial action by members of The Services Union (TSU) is not affecting their ability to carry out the necessary repairs. Potential causes being considered include the impact of heavy rainfall and significant temperature fluctuations.

Impact on Local Institutions

The disruption has also affected local services. The Tingalpa State School confirmed it was without water due to the burst main on Wynnum Road. An education department spokesperson stated that the school remains open and has implemented contingency measures. These include:

  • Alternative toilet facilities.
  • Water tanks.
  • Access to bottled water.

The school community is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates to parents as necessary.

Traffic Chaos and Road Closures

The burst on Wynnum Road created significant traffic problems yesterday. Eastbound traffic experienced diversions between Boundary Street and Hamilton Street throughout the morning. Compounding the issues, a truck reportedly struck powerlines on a diverted route, prompting further traffic control by the Queensland Fire Department. Police were on the scene to manage the situation.

Local councillor Lisa Atwood expressed hope that the road might be reopened later today, but cautioned that “there are still many variables that could affect timing.”

Resident Experiences

The impact of the bursts has been keenly felt by local residents. Brenda O’Reilly, a receptionist at the Tingalpa Family Health Centre, recounted to ABC Radio Brisbane that traffic had continued to drive through the flooded Wynnum Road yesterday before diversions were established. She observed water still “fountaining” from the burst pipe when she left her practice around 3 pm.

Adrian Murray, a resident of Tingalpa, described how water from the burst pipe flowed up his driveway yesterday afternoon. The water supply to his property was turned off this morning, and he expressed uncertainty about when it would be restored. “No-one’s spoken to us,” he stated. Mr. Murray also reported experiencing a sleepless night due to the noise from repair crews working through the night. “There’s nothing blocking that noise except for my little fibro wall,” he added.

Urban Utilities has assured the public that they are committed to resolving the issue as quickly and efficiently as possible. The ongoing repairs, while complex, are the priority to restore normal water services to the affected suburbs.
