Broncos lose star as Staggs faces ban

Broncos Face New Challenges as Kotoni Staggs Suspended

Michael Maguire has faced another difficult setback as Kotoni Staggs prepares to serve a two-week suspension for a dangerous tackle on Hugo Savala. The incident occurred during what initially seemed like a tough match for the Broncos in Sydney, where they had to come from a 30-point deficit to threaten a historic upset against the Roosters. However, the momentum shifted when Staggs was sent off for an ugly hit on Savala.

The impact of Staggs’ dismissal was evident on his face as he left the field, with his teammates struggling to withstand the pressure of a 13-man Roosters attack. Despite this, the Broncos showed resilience and determination throughout the game.

A Courageous Effort from the Team

Patrick Carrigan took responsibility for Staggs’ actions, explaining that if he hadn’t made an error in the previous set, his teammate wouldn’t have been in a position to make such a dangerous defensive move. However, Carrigan’s words did not sway the match review committee, who handed Staggs a two-game ban. If Staggs decides to challenge the decision, he could face a three-game suspension if unsuccessful.

Maguire remained focused on the positive aspects of the team’s performance, highlighting their courage and determination. “It was a courageous effort from the boys,” Maguire said at his press conference. “I am disappointed for the players because they put in a great effort… but if we were a bit sharper in a few areas, it could have been different.”

Building on Team Spirit

Maguire emphasized the spirit and unity within the team, noting that the players showed great cohesion and determination. “I definitely felt that the ways the players were playing together and the spirit of the group at the moment, they were certainly a big chance (to claim the win).” He also praised the team’s ability to adapt and score points when they were on form.

Carrigan acknowledged that the team was “jumped at the start” by the Roosters, but he believed the early struggles were not unexpected. While he didn’t reveal the specific words Maguire used to inspire the second-half performance, he credited the coach’s confidence in the team’s ability to turn things around.

“We didn’t start it ideally in the second half, but once we got possession and held the ball, we could put some pressure on,” Carrigan said. He also highlighted the team’s resilience despite ongoing injuries, stating that every player who dons the Broncos jersey is ready to perform.

Injuries Add to the Challenge

Adam Reynolds is one of several key players who will miss the upcoming match due to a category one concussion. Maguire remains uncertain about whether any injured stars will return before the next game against Manly.

“I don’t think we have anyone coming back,” he said. “But if we keep fighting and showing the character that the team has got, that’s to me what it is all about. It doesn’t matter who is there, they will get in and have a go. Whoever plays against Manly will be in there having a crack.”
