Broncos star nears contract deal to stay with one club

Key Player’s Future at Brisbane Broncos in Focus

Brisbane Broncos’ star player, Patrick Carrigan, is set to begin discussions with his management about re-signing with the club. This move aims to ensure that he remains a key figure for the team in the long term. As one of the most consistent and hard-working forwards, Carrigan has been a vital part of the Broncos’ success over the years.

Carrigan’s management has already reached out to the Broncos to initiate preliminary talks about a pay rise in his extension. Despite still being under contract for another two-and-a-half years, this conversation highlights the value the club places on his contributions. At 28 years old, it is likely that Carrigan would see out his entire career with the Broncos if both parties agree on an extension.

This weekend, Carrigan will return from suspension, marking a significant boost for the Broncos as they regain more players following a challenging four weeks. Alongside him, Reece Walsh is also set to return for the clash against the Sydney Roosters on Saturday. His return adds to the team’s firepower after securing back-to-back wins despite a heavy injury toll.

The past month has seen several key players miss extended time due to various issues. These include Reece Walsh, Payne Haas, Corey Jensen, Ben Hunt, Brendan Piakura, and Aublix Tawha. With Haas’ departure to South Sydney at the end of the year, the Broncos are expected to free up salary cap space. This could lead to a well-deserved pay increase for Carrigan, ensuring he feels comfortable at Red Hill.

Broncos CEO Dave Donaghy has confirmed that keeping Carrigan at the club is a top priority. He emphasized Carrigan’s importance to the team, highlighting his long-standing commitment since he was a young player. Donaghy praised Carrigan’s leadership and positive interactions with the club, noting that his work ethic and determination to be the best are admirable.

“He is very marketable, but he is also very committed to being the best player that he can be,” Donaghy said. “Right now, he is at the top of his game for both Queensland and Australia.”

With Carrigan’s current deal expiring in the PNG Chiefs’ second year in the NRL, there have been speculations about potential interest from the Melanesian club. The recent historic signing of Jarome Luai with the Chiefs has sparked a domino effect, potentially attracting other players to the club. However, Carrigan has dismissed any thoughts of moving out of Brisbane, reaffirming his desire to remain a Bronco.

“Before you ask me about PNG, I’m very comfortable with where I am at the moment,” Carrigan stated. “Jarome’s leadership and resume in the game speaks for itself. But I think the opportunity to be part of a club that can unify a nation would be something that speaks to a lot of players, irrespective of the dollar value.”

Carrigan has played 136 NRL games, all in Broncos colours, along with 12 appearances for the QLD Maroons since his debut in 2019. His dedication and passion for the game are evident, as he continues to live his dream by representing the Broncos every week.
