Burton’s Vegas Dream in Jeopardy After Hamstring Scare
Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs star Matt Burton’s highly anticipated trip to Las Vegas is facing significant doubt following a hamstring injury sustained during the club’s trial match against the Newcastle Knights on Saturday night. The incident, which occurred in the 24th minute of the game, saw the playmaker clutch the back of his left leg before heading off the field.
Club director Phil Gould later provided an update, relaying information from the team doctor. The assessment suggested a “low-grade hamstring on the left” with “strength and range retained.” Burton himself indicated he “just felt a pinch in a tackle” on social media platform X. Further scans are now scheduled to determine the full extent of the damage and the potential impact on his availability for the upcoming Las Vegas fixture.
Speaking in commentary, Greg Alexander expressed concern over Burton’s gait after the injury. “That’s never a good sign if a player is limping,” Alexander noted. “Generally, if you have a minor hamstring, you can walk without limping.” Despite this, reports from the Bulldogs’ medical staff suggested they were “not too concerned” immediately after the assessment.
The footage of the incident reveals it happened as Burton attempted to break the defensive line with a dummy pass near the halfway mark. At the time of his departure, the Bulldogs were comfortably leading 10-0, with Burton himself and Jonathan Sua contributing tries. The team continued to perform well in his absence, with Jaeman Salmon adding another try in the 33rd minute.
The Bulldogs are slated to depart for Las Vegas on Friday, with their opening match of the season against the St. George Illawarra Dragons scheduled for March 1st. By halftime, Burton was observed with ice on his hamstring in the sheds, leading Alexander to comment, “I don’t think he’s any chance of playing in Vegas.”
Potential Replacements and Match Analysis
Should Burton be ruled out, Bulldogs captain Stephen Crichton has emerged as a potential replacement in the centres. Crichton has been performing strongly at left centre following a recent positional adjustment that saw him swap with Bronson Xerri.
The second half of the trial match continued to showcase the Bulldogs’ dominance. The team extended their lead, finishing the first half ahead 16-0. The final two tries of the match were scored by Viliame Kikau and Cooper Toy, ultimately securing a resounding 28-0 victory.
A significant area of concern for the Knights was their completion rate, which stood at a disappointing 64 percent. This was further compounded by their 16 total errors compared to the Bulldogs’ 10, highlighting a clear disparity in execution and ball security between the two teams. The comprehensive win, despite the concern over Burton’s injury, provides a positive, albeit cautious, outlook for the Bulldogs as they prepare for their historic overseas fixture.
