Gunners Cruise Through FA Cup Tie Amidst Injury Concerns
Arsenal has booked their place in the next round of the FA Cup with a dominant 4-0 victory over Wigan Athletic at the Emirates Stadium. The comfortable win, however, has been overshadowed by fresh injury worries for Mikel Arteta’s squad, casting a shadow over their otherwise impressive performance.
The Gunners wasted no time in asserting their dominance. Noni Madueke opened the scoring in the 11th minute, setting the tone for the afternoon. Gabriel Martinelli doubled their lead just eight minutes later, before a unfortunate own goal from Wigan’s Jack Hunt in the 23rd minute extended Arsenal’s advantage. The rout was completed before the half-hour mark with a strike from Gabriel Jesus.
While Arsenal failed to add to their four-goal tally in the second half, the comprehensive victory marked their first progression beyond the FA Cup fourth round since their triumph in 2020. This result also keeps alive their slim hopes of achieving an unprecedented quadruple this season.
Despite the celebratory atmosphere surrounding the cup progression, concerns have surfaced regarding the fitness of key players. Left-back Riccardo Calafiori was a late withdrawal from the starting lineup, being replaced moments before kick-off due to an unspecified injury. This necessitated a reshuffling of the team, with Bukayo Saka being promoted from the substitutes’ bench to fill the void.
Further compounding the injury woes, right-back Ben White was forced off the field in the second half after pulling up and requiring treatment. The extent of his issue remains to be seen, but his departure adds another name to Arsenal’s growing injury list.
When questioned about the team’s injury situation post-match, manager Mikel Arteta confirmed the immediate concerns. “Riccardo Calafiori and Ben White are the only doubts,” he stated. “We have to wait and see in the next 48 hours how things develop.”
Arteta also provided an update on the absence of captain Martin Ødegaard. “With Martin, we have to wait and see,” he explained. “Obviously, he picked up that knock on the action where we conceded the goal [against Brentford in the Premier League in midweek], and he wasn’t fit for today.”
The recurring nature of some injuries is a point of concern. Calafiori has been managing a muscle injury, having only started two games this year. Ben White, meanwhile, has been carefully managed since returning from a hamstring injury in December.
The injury list extends further with Mikel Merino still sidelined with a foot injury, and Kai Havertz recently picking up a muscle strain. Reflecting on the mounting fitness issues, Arteta acknowledged the challenge. “Yes, and especially because we are going through [to the next round],” he said. “Before it was the strikers, then it was the defenders, now it’s the midfielders, but we are still coping with that.”
He stressed the importance of getting players back to full fitness. “We need some players back and fit and to give us not only numbers but different options in relation to the opponents that we have,” Arteta added. “So the quicker they are [fit], the better.”
On a more positive note, William Saliba made his return to action after a recent illness, playing for an hour before being substituted by teenager Marli Salmon. His presence back on the pitch will be a welcome boost for the Gunners as they navigate a demanding fixture schedule.
The club will be hoping for a swift recovery for their injured players to maintain their strong form across all competitions. The depth of the squad will be tested in the coming weeks, and the return of key personnel will be crucial for their ambitions this season.
