Cole Palmer’s Performance Under Scrutiny
Calum McFarlane, the interim head coach of Chelsea, has recently joined a growing list of managers who are defending the form of Cole Palmer. The English playmaker has been under pressure following accusations that his performance is declining. However, McFarlane insists that the narrative suggesting Palmer is playing poorly is misleading.
Before McFarlane, both Liam Rosenior and Enzo Maresca had also come to Palmer’s defense amid similar criticisms. It remains uncertain whether Thomas Tuchel will include Palmer in England’s squad for this summer’s World Cup. Despite these concerns, McFarlane believes Palmer would be a valuable asset for the national team.
McFarlane emphasized that Palmer cannot be held responsible for his teammates not capitalizing on the chances he creates. He also pointed out that Palmer has been dealing with the first significant injury of his career—a nagging groin issue that has no clear recovery timeline. According to Palmer himself, the injury has left him unable to sprint or shoot when he returned to play under Maresca.
In the Premier League this season, Palmer has scored nine goals, five of which came from penalties, assisted once, and created 22 chances. While these numbers are lower than in the previous two seasons, they have been affected by his limited minutes due to injury.
Ahead of the match against Nottingham Forest, a game crucial for Chelsea’s European ambitions, McFarlane commented:
“Cole has had a difficult period. He’s had his first injury that he’s ever really had in his career, and he’s had to learn how to deal with that.”

“I don’t agree with the narrative that he isn’t playing well. There are obviously games where he can impact more, but there have also been a lot of occasions where he’s created a lot of good chances for players. He can’t control whether that’s finished.”
“It’s just a case of building that consistency. I’m really pleased with Cole. He shows us his talent every single day, his energy and his enthusiasm to play. He’s still a top, top player, one of the best in the world. I have no concerns over Cole being ready to impact games from now to the end of the season, and hopefully in the World Cup, in big moments for England.”
Pressure on Palmer
There is added pressure on Palmer to perform due to the high expectations placed on him after his first two exceptional seasons as a Chelsea superstar. Although McFarlane previously worked in Manchester City’s academy, he did not personally interact with Palmer. However, he used to watch Palmer excel for the Under 21s.
“We have all watched Cole Palmer enough to see the freedom he plays the game with,” McFarlane said. “He sees things that other people don’t see, so it was very similar. He is just doing it at a higher level against a higher level of opposition, but very much the same type of player.”
Positive News for Chelsea
Chelsea received some positive news regarding their squad. Reece James and Levi Colwill could return for the match against Nottingham Forest after recovering from their respective hamstring and ACL injuries. For Colwill, this would mark his first inclusion in a matchday squad this season.
When asked if he had been offered a new contract with bonuses tied to achievements such as winning the FA Cup or qualifying for Europe, McFarlane chose not to answer. Given the heavily incentivized nature of player contracts, it is reasonable to assume such terms may be in place, but the interim coach preferred to remain silent on the matter.
