Carragher Questions Delap’s Chelsea Switch: A Step Too Far?
Football pundit Jamie Carragher has voiced his opinion that Liam Delap made a significant misstep by joining Chelsea last summer, suggesting a move to another Premier League club would have been a more prudent career choice. Delap, a 23-year-old forward, made the switch to Stamford Bridge for a reported £30 million from Ipswich Town. His acquisition by Chelsea followed a period of intense interest from a host of top-tier clubs, including Manchester United and Manchester City.
Despite Ipswich Town’s relegation from the Premier League last season, Delap managed to net an impressive 12 goals. His dynamic movement and blistering pace often proved a handful for opposition defences throughout the campaign. However, his transition to Chelsea has not mirrored the success he enjoyed at his previous club. To date, Delap has contributed only two goals and one assist in 23 appearances across all competitions for the London outfit.
Several injury setbacks have hampered Delap’s integration into the Chelsea squad. He initially found it challenging to secure a consistent starting position under former manager Enzo Maresca. The situation has seen little improvement under the current coaching staff led by Liam Rosenior. In his 17 Premier League outings this season, Delap has only started nine matches and has completed the full 90 minutes on just two occasions since the beginning of 2026.

Speaking on the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast, Carragher articulated his views on the transfer. “It was a bad move,” he stated bluntly. “Honestly, it was a bad move going to Chelsea. I just think young players, when they’re on a journey and getting better, the jump from Ipswich and Chelsea was too big; he needed somewhere in the middle.”
Carragher elaborated on his reasoning, highlighting the potential benefits of a less ambitious, yet more consistent, playing environment. “Somewhere like Everton,” he suggested. “If you play centre forward for Everton and play every game and know even if you have a few bad games you’re still going to play.” This suggests Carragher believes a club where Delap could be a guaranteed starter, even with occasional dips in form, would have been more conducive to his development than the highly competitive Chelsea environment.
Delap now finds himself significantly behind fellow summer signing João Félix in the Chelsea forward pecking order. Félix, a Brazilian international, is currently experiencing a purple patch of form. The 24-year-old has been directly involved in an impressive eight goals in his last five Premier League matches, scoring four times and rapidly establishing himself as a fan favourite under Rosenior.
Chelsea currently occupies fifth place in the Premier League standings. Their recent form saw them squander a two-goal lead in a midweek 2-2 draw against Leeds United at Stamford Bridge. They remain a point adrift of Manchester United, who sit in fourth place.
A potential opportunity for Delap to feature prominently may arise in the upcoming FA Cup tie. Chelsea are scheduled to travel to the MKM Stadium on Friday to face a resurgent Championship side, Hull City. Hull City is managed by Liam Rosenior, who previously managed the club before his move to Strasbourg.
Following the FA Cup fixture, Chelsea’s next Premier League challenge will be at home against Burnley on February 21. This will be followed by a stern test against league leaders Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in early March, a fixture that will undoubtedly gauge Chelsea’s title aspirations. The ongoing struggles and limited opportunities for Delap at Chelsea raise questions about the club’s transfer strategy and the player’s future prospects.
