Calum McFarlane has praised Levi Colwill as the ‘best player on the pitch’ following a crucial 1-1 draw between Chelsea and Liverpool. The match, played at Anfield, marked the end of Chelsea’s six-game losing streak in the Premier League. Despite a strong start from Liverpool, with Ryan Gravenberch scoring just six minutes into the game, Chelsea managed to equalise before half-time through an impressive goal from Enzo Fernandez. Both teams had chances to win in the second half, but neither could find the decisive moment.
McFarlane, who took charge of Chelsea after Liam Rosenior was sacked last month, expressed satisfaction with his team’s response to their previous heavy defeat against Nottingham Forest. He believes that the Blues were unlucky not to come away with a victory in this encounter.
A Standout Performance
McFarlane specifically highlighted Colwill for his outstanding performance in his first Premier League start of the season. The defender’s ability to maintain a solid defensive line allowed the team to play more aggressively.
‘I thought Levi was probably the best player on the pitch,’ McFarlane said. ‘He allows us to defend man for man on the last line so we can be really aggressive. He also gives us a lot of balance; he did everything at a really high level today. To play like that after being out for nearly a year speaks to his character and who he is.’
Building Momentum
The manager acknowledged that while the team did not reach the standard they are capable of in their previous game against Nottingham Forest, there were positive signs in this match.
‘It’s good to get some momentum back,’ McFarlane added. ‘I thought we could’ve won the game because there were moments that didn’t quite go our way, but it’s good to recover after the Forest game. We need to build on that in the final [next weekend’s FA Cup final against Manchester City], which will be a massive challenge.’
Despite the draw, Chelsea could still find themselves in the bottom half of the Premier League by the end of the weekend.

Liverpool’s Struggles Continue
Meanwhile, Liverpool remains in fourth place, maintaining their position for Champions League qualification despite another inconsistent performance. Manager Arne Slot admitted that his team missed key opportunities during the match.
‘We started off really well and got a big chance from a set-piece which was close to making it 2-0,’ Slot said. ‘Unfortunately, like last week, we conceded a set piece. It was such a sloppy goal. The second half I saw a completely different intensity. We went close a few times. Like so many times this season, we hit the post and bar.’
Slot also pointed out that his team struggled to control Chelsea’s players, particularly in midfield.
Fan Reaction
Reacting to the boos from Liverpool fans at the final whistle, Slot said, ‘That’s probably got something to do with us not winning. It completely makes sense people are disappointed if Liverpool don’t win.’

Looking Ahead
Both teams now turn their attention to their next fixtures. For Chelsea, the focus is on the upcoming FA Cup final against Manchester City, where they will need to build on the momentum gained from this draw.
For Liverpool, the challenge is to improve their consistency and ensure they can compete at the top of the league.

As the season progresses, both clubs will need to address their shortcomings and capitalize on their strengths to achieve their respective goals.
