Chrissy Teigen’s Met Gala Absence Sparks Confusion and Laughter
Chrissy Teigen, known for her sharp wit and humor, recently sparked a wave of confusion among her fans with a social media post that appeared to be about a personal loss. The TV personality and cookbook author, 40, shared an Instagram video explaining why she couldn’t attend the 2026 Met Gala. In the clip, she claimed she was attending the “funeral” of a “dear friend” who had died. However, the situation took an unexpected turn as fans initially misunderstood the nature of the event.
In the video, Teigen is seen dressed in black funeral attire on her way to what she described as a “ceremony.” The text in the video reads: “We recently attended a funeral for a dear friend.” This led many fans to believe that a real person had passed away. As a result, some fans expressed their condolences, thinking it was a genuine loss.
However, the truth behind the video was far less somber. The “dear friend” was actually the closing down of a Taco Bell restaurant in Seattle. The misunderstanding stemmed from the lack of context in the initial caption, which only mentioned the absence from the Met Gala without clarifying the reason.
The video featured Teigen mourning in a dramatic fashion, holding a candle and red rose to commemorate the loss of the building. As the track “Welcome to the Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance played in the background, she pretended to cry, adding to the comedic effect of the post.
John Legend, Teigen’s husband, responded to the video with a laughing crying emoji, indicating he understood the joke. However, not all of Teigen’s followers were as quick to catch on. Some fans were genuinely upset, with one commenting, “I thought you died when I saw her sad face. Goddammit.” Another fan shared their condolences, saying, “Omg yikes I thought this was a real funeral.”
Jen Atkin, Teigen’s famous friend and hairstylist, also reacted to the post, writing, “Do you know how many people THINK I DIED???? Do better.” Her comment received over 2,500 likes, highlighting the widespread confusion and amusement surrounding the video.
Despite the initial misinterpretation, many of Teigen’s followers appreciated the humor in the situation. One fan wrote, “THIS IS SOOOO DRAMATIC I LOVE 🤣.” Another defended the post, saying, “🤣🤣🤣 Most of you missed the point that she would rather be at an unhinged Taco Bell funeral than the Met Gala!🤭 This is my type of carrying on @chrissyteigen 🫶🏾.”
Others praised Teigen for her unconventional approach, with one comment stating, “Chrissyyyy!!! You are the most unserious person to ever grace our timeline 😹 also sending my condolences 🕊️.” The post quickly became a topic of discussion, with many fans celebrating Teigen’s creativity and sense of humor.
Teigen, who is also a podcast host and three-time cookbook author, has attended the Met Gala in the past. Her last appearance was in 2017, and she has previously been seen at the event alongside her husband, John Legend.
