Tough Calls and Open Doors: Tahlia McGrath’s Future with the Australian Women’s Cricket Team
The Australian women’s cricket team faced a surprising defeat in the opening T20 of their multi-format series against India in Sydney, a loss compounded by the even greater shock of leaving out experienced all-rounder Tahlia McGrath from the playing XI. Coach Shelley Nitschke acknowledged that dropping the co-vice-captain was one of the most difficult decisions she’s had to make, but stressed that the door remains firmly open for the veteran to reclaim her place in the squad.
The home side struggled with the bat, managing only 133 runs before rain intervened in the run chase, ultimately leading to a comprehensive loss. The decision to omit McGrath, alongside experienced pace bowler Megan Schutt, from the starting lineup for the crucial opening match raised eyebrows across the cricketing landscape. This marks a significant early call for Sophie Molineux, who has recently taken over the captaincy following the retirement of Alyssa Healy.
Nitschke elaborated on the selectors’ reasoning behind excluding one of Australia’s most seasoned campaigners. “Tahlia has been a massive part of this team for a long time, and obviously has captained in Healy’s absence at times and is a fantastic leader,” Nitschke stated. “It’s actually a really tough call because her international T20 record is actually really good, and she’s done a good job for us over a number of years, and unfortunately, she’s got squeezed out.”
The coach admitted the difficulty of the decision, highlighting the strong performances of other players. “To leave her out was a tough call. But like I said, Nic Carey has been playing really well, so that was a really tough call on ‘T-Mac’,” she added, referring to McGrath by her common nickname.
McGrath boasts an impressive international T20 record, averaging over 42 with the bat and holding the fourth position in the global rankings for the format. However, her performance in the 2025 season, particularly in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL), saw a dip in form, with only 98 runs scored at an average of 14. McGrath herself has acknowledged that her confidence took a hit during this period.

Despite the recent struggles, there are encouraging signs of a resurgence. McGrath has shown promising form in her last five Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) innings for South Australia, notching up three scores exceeding 40. Nitschke believes that consistent runs are the key for McGrath to force her way back into the national side.
“I think she’s showed her form in the WNCL, she’s starting to play some really good cricket again … so that’s been great for her confidence,” Nitschke commented. “She’s feeling really good about her game, so I certainly think she’ll be back to her best soon.”
The coach emphasised the team’s continued support for McGrath. “And I think just touching base and making sure that she knows that we care about her, we want to see her back … and just keeping encouraging her that if she can get back to her best, she’s always pushing for a spot.”
As Australia prepares to face India in Canberra on Thursday night, aiming to level the series, selectors are likely considering further changes to the lineup. Nitschke, however, dismissed the notion that the opening match represented a “false start” for the team, despite their struggles ahead of the World Cup later this year.
India’s impressive performance signals a significant closing of the gap between the two nations, a point underscored by their semi-final exit of Australia from the 50-over World Cup last year.
“I don’t think it was a false start,” Nitschke stated firmly. “We obviously didn’t play our best cricket today – certainly we would’ve liked to have posted a few more runs than that. But that can happen, so I don’t think it was a false start by any means.”
She concluded by acknowledging the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket. “That can happen in T20 cricket, and we weren’t quite on top of our game today.” The focus now shifts to finding their rhythm and demonstrating their true capabilities in the remainder of the series.
