A Bold Leadership Decision Sparks Debate
Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar has voiced his concerns over the Rajasthan Royals’ decision to appoint Riyan Parag as their captain for the IPL 2026 campaign. He described the move as something that “makes no sense” from a cricketing perspective. This announcement has sparked a significant amount of discussion among fans and analysts alike, with many questioning the rationale behind such a choice.
Riyan Parag has been a part of the Rajasthan franchise since 2019 and has shown moments of brilliance with the bat. However, his consistency has been an issue, and despite this, the team has placed its trust in him as the leader for the upcoming season. While the franchise has had a decent campaign so far, Manjrekar believes this decision raises several questions about the leadership strategy.
The Personality of a Leader
Speaking on Sportstar’s Insight Edge podcast, Manjrekar highlighted Parag’s unique personality and self-belief, which he finds intriguing. He expressed confusion over the level of faith the Rajasthan Royals have placed in the young player. According to Manjrekar, Parag is not like the typical Indian players, noting his fitness and the way he carries himself. However, he questioned the reasoning behind the team’s decision to back him so strongly.
Manjrekar said:
“He’s not one of your typical Indian players. He’s fit and just the way he walks around and everything struts around. But I would say after the kind of performances I’ve seen over the years. It is something that I find a little strange that the Rajasthan Royals have backed him so much.”
Captaincy Change: A Shift in Leadership
The captaincy change has also drawn attention, as Parag replaces Sanju Samson at the helm. Manjrekar pointed out that Samson had captained the team for several years before being replaced. He expressed uncertainty about the reasons behind this shift but emphasized that, from a cricketing standpoint, the move doesn’t make much sense.
He added:
“I mean, Sanju Samson captained them for a few years, and then he was removed, and Riyan Parag took over. I don’t know what happened there. But I don’t think from a cricketing point of view, it makes any sense at all.”
Manjrekar further commented:
“It’s a bit harsh to say this but he’s just got too much as a reward. Having not really worked hard for those rewards. So it’s a very interesting case pertaining to the Rajasthan Royals.”
Controversies Surrounding Parag
Parag has recently been in the news for being fined 25 percent of his match fees for vaping in the dressing room during a game against Punjab Kings. This incident adds another layer to the ongoing discussion about his behavior and conduct on and off the field.
Despite these controversies, Manjrekar acknowledges Parag’s self-confidence as one of his defining traits. However, he notes that this confidence can sometimes be detrimental.
Manjrekar said:
“What catches the eye about Riyan Parag is his unbelievable self-confidence. Even when he was not delivering, if you saw him in the field, the kind of stuff that he did. It was just almost arrogance for somebody who was struggling to fit in or deliver.”
Batting Approach and Risky Shots
Manjrekar also observed Parag’s batting approach and his tendency to play risky shots. He noted that Parag often delivers sensational shots but tends to get out due to overconfidence.
Manjrekar stated:
“So when I see his overall career as well, you would seem he would have played numerous innings of 14 or 15 runs, where he would come in and hit a couple of cracking shots, and you would be blown away. And then the next body’s playing the same shot and getting out. That is his MO,”
He concluded:
“That is how Riyan Parag generally plays: sensational shots but I think somewhere the overconfidence or whatever just gets him to keep trying to play those shots. And because he mishits so many and gets out he’s obviously not focusing on every attacking shot he plays.”
A Unique Character
In his final comments, Manjrekar described Parag as an interesting character and admitted that he still doesn’t fully understand the Rajasthan Royals’ decision to appoint him as captain. His insights provide a thought-provoking perspective on the challenges and complexities of leadership in cricket.
