Detective Returns to Coronation Street for Gripping Whodunnit
Weatherfield is set to be rocked by a new mystery as a familiar face from the local constabulary makes a comeback to Coronation Street. Detective Sergeant Wiley, portrayed by actor Ashley Campbell, is reportedly returning to the iconic ITV soap opera after a three-year hiatus. His last appearance was in 2023, and his reappearance is tied to a thrilling whodunnit storyline that promises to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
DS Wiley first joined the cobbles in 2021, a character introduced to investigate the tragic and fatal attack on Seb Franklin, played by Harry Visinoni. Following this, he was involved in a more recent storyline where he interrogated Max Turner (Paddy Bever) regarding his potential involvement with far-right extremism.
According to reports, Ashley Campbell is slated to be back on screens as early as next week, coinciding with the launch of this new, suspenseful plot. A source close to the production revealed the excitement surrounding his return: “Ashley is a great actor and Coronation Street is glad to have him back.”

The insider further elaborated on the storyline, stating, “He’ll be returning to the soap next week after a mystery Weatherfield resident is found dead.” It’s understood that DS Wiley’s involvement will be for a limited duration, appearing in just a few episodes. Fans will need to tune in closely to discover how this dramatic narrative unfolds and what role the detective plays in uncovering the truth. The length of his potential return beyond these initial episodes remains uncertain.
Ashley Campbell is no stranger to the world of television dramas, with a career that has seen him feature in other popular soaps such as Emmerdale and Hollyoaks. His acting credits also extend to a variety of well-known programmes, including appearances in Call The Midwife, Doctor Who, Father Brown, and Doctors.
Fan Favourite Takes a Break for Rival Programme Filming
In separate but related news, another beloved Coronation Street star is temporarily stepping away from the cobbles to film scenes for a rival production. Catherine Tyldesley, who reprised her role as Eva Price in October 2025, has been a prominent figure since her comeback. Eva took on the role of landlady at The Rovers Return, managing the pub alongside her new partner Ben Driscoll (Aaron McCusker) and their blended family.
The 42-year-old actress is also known for her leading role as Kate Woods in the Channel 5 drama, The Good Ship Murder. It is now reported that Tyldesley is set to travel to Malta this spring to film her on-screen departure from this crime series.
A source speaking to The Sun’s TV Biz column confirmed the arrangement: “Cath spoke to her bosses at Corrie about taking some time off to film her Good Ship exit and they agreed.” The source added that when Tyldesley agreed to return to Coronation Street, there was initial uncertainty about her availability for other projects, but “fortunately it’s all working out.”
The Good Ship Murder is currently concluding its third series, with filming for the fourth series scheduled to commence later this year. Notably, Catherine Tyldesley stars in this crime drama alongside her former Coronation Street co-star, Shayne Ward, who played Aidan Connor. Her character, Kate Woods, is expected to bow out of the fourth series with a positive resolution.
“There was talk about possibly killing off her character but in the end bosses decided that she would get a happy ending,” the source revealed. “The writers are delighted that Cath is able to return to film her exit. Cath and Shayne have formed such an incredible partnership on-screen and the viewers deserve to see how it all ends for them.”
Catherine Tyldesley’s return to Coronation Street marked her comeback after a seven-year absence from Weatherfield. Upon her return, she shared her observations about the show’s direction, suggesting that the soap’s producers were aiming to recapture an “old school Corrie vibe.”
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Tyldesley commented on the vision of the show’s producer, Kate Brooks. “What Kate Brooks, our wonderful producer, has done is bring back an old school Corrie feeling,” she explained. “She is super passionate about that and she is a big Corrie fan and that was one of the reasons I agreed to come back, was because of her vision for the show and where she wanted to take it.”
Tyldesley highlighted the importance of character-led storylines and strong female characters, elements she believes Coronation Street has always excelled at and that audiences crave. “Finding those character-led storylines, with strong women at the forefront is something Corrie has always done so well and that the audience seem to crave, and I think Kate is feeding that,” she stated. “It’s important to move with the times but also know who your target audience is, everyone kept saying they want that ‘Old school Corrie vibe, we want it be character led’ and I feel the show is nailing that.”
Coronation Street continues to air on ITV1 and is available for streaming on ITVX.
