Cowboys Unleash Rampage in Townsville, Sending Warning to NRL Rivals
The North Queensland Cowboys have sent a resounding statement across the National Rugby League (NRL) landscape, dismantling a youthful Penrith Panthers outfit with a dominant 66-24 victory in Townsville. The performance emphatically signalled the end of last season’s struggles, with the Cowboys showcasing a level of attacking prowess that will have rivals taking serious notice.
The disparity between the top-tier NRL competition and its reserve grade was starkly evident on Friday night. Several Cowboys stars, eager to cement their places for the upcoming Las Vegas fixtures, delivered performances that will undoubtedly be discussed by selectors.
Mahoney Shines in a Dominant Display
However, it was the electrifying form of hooker Reed Mahoney that truly stole the show. Mahoney, who endured a less-than-ideal 2023 season after departing the Canterbury Bulldogs due to Lachlan Galvin’s arrival impacting the club’s spine, looked entirely at home in the Cowboys’ No. 9 jersey. His performance demonstrated he possesses all the qualities to thrive in North Queensland.
The Cowboys wasted no time in asserting their dominance. Just two minutes into the match, Braidon Burns crossed the tryline, the beneficiary of a perfectly weighted pass from Scott Drinkwater.
A subsequent error by Penrith fullback Jaxen Edgar just two minutes later proved costly. Jaxon Purdue seized the opportunity, pouncing on a loose ball and diving over from close range to extend the Cowboys’ early lead.
Mahoney wasted no time in showcasing his impact in his new colours, leaving no doubt that he is the “dominant number nine” the Cowboys can significantly benefit from. His influence extended beyond his own play, with Australian coach Kevin Walters highlighting Mahoney’s crucial role in setting up Scott Drinkwater for the team’s third try as a testament to his value.
“He has found his new home up north, and he is looking pretty good to me,” Walters commented on Fox League. “He is in Townsville to prove a point. He’s been involved in everything good for the Cowboys so far… he is showing us he is a very good player.”
Cowboys Pile on the Points Before Half-Time
The scoring spree continued with Burns bagging his second try of the evening, followed by Jake Clifford adding two tries of his own. This onslaught left the junior Penrith side struggling to find any answers. Even a sin binning for Cowboys player Zac Laybutt couldn’t halt their momentum. Remarkably, with 12 men on the field, the Cowboys managed to add another two tries, establishing a commanding 44-0 lead by half-time.
With such a comfortable buffer, Cowboys coach Todd Payten opted to rest several key players, including Mahoney, for the entirety of the second half.
Panthers Show Glimmers of Fight in Second Half
Despite the significant deficit, the Panthers emerged for the second half with renewed determination. Star centre Jesse McLean was the first to get his team on the scoreboard, diving over in the corner.
A ten-minute period without further scoring followed, hinting at some improved defensive resolve from Penrith. However, the Cowboys’ attacking pressure eventually broke through again, with Kai O’Donnell crossing for a double.
Jirah Liddiard then produced a moment of brilliance, intercepting a pass approximately 25 metres from the Panthers’ tryline and racing the length of the field to bring the visitors’ score to 12. Promising young Panthers halfback Keahn Skipps followed suit with tries in the 70th and 76th minutes, earning praise from Walters.
“He’s just playing backyard footy. He just skips away,” Walters remarked about Skipps. “It has been a good second half for these young Panthers players. They have done well to keep it competitive.”
However, these late efforts were insufficient to significantly alter the scoreline. A final try from Thomas Mikaele sealed a victory by over 40 points, with the final whistle blowing at a decisive 66-24. The Cowboys’ comprehensive performance has undoubtedly positioned them as a team to watch in the upcoming NRL season.
