Craig Bellamy quits coaching role

Laurie Daley Steps Back from NSW Blues Coaching Role

Melbourne Storm head coach Laurie Daley has stepped back from his role as a coaching advisor for the NSW Blues. This decision comes after a period of uncertainty and challenges within the team’s leadership structure.

Daley took on the role of head coach for the Blues in a second stint last year, following Michael Maguire’s departure after just one season to take up the position as coach of the Brisbane Broncos. During his previous tenure, Daley faced criticism due to the lack of success experienced by the team. However, he was able to secure support from the NSWRL board by having Craig Bellamy, widely regarded as one of the game’s top coaches, in his corner.

Bellamy Steps Down from Role

According to a report by News Corp, Bellamy has decided to step down from his role for the 2026 series. This decision came despite the Blues’ victory in Game 1 of the series on enemy territory. The Blues have yet to replace Bellamy’s position, and it is believed that the Melbourne Storm’s current losing streak had no connection to this decision, which was made several weeks ago.

Bellamy’s Storm have struggled significantly, with their last six games resulting in losses—the longest losing streak of his coaching career. The team is currently in the worst ladder position they have ever held, following a heavy defeat to the South Sydney Rabbitohs on Saturday evening at home.

Challenges for the Storm

So far this season, the Storm have lost six of their eight games, and they will need to win at least 10 of their remaining 16 matches to have any chance of qualifying for the finals. In his role with the NSW Blues, Bellamy was present at training camps whenever the Storm had a bye week. He also supported Daley during games, sitting in the coaches’ box alongside him.

Additional Setbacks for Daley

This move marks the second setback for Daley ahead of this year’s series. Dean Young recently stepped down from his role after being appointed as the interim head coach of the St George Illawarra Dragons following the sacking of Shane Flanagan.

Looking Ahead

With these changes in leadership, the NSW Blues will need to quickly adapt and find new strategies to improve their performance. The absence of key figures like Bellamy and Young could impact the team’s dynamics, but it also presents an opportunity for fresh ideas and approaches.

As the team prepares for the upcoming series, the focus will be on rebuilding confidence and strengthening the coaching structure to ensure better results in the future. The coming months will be crucial for both the Blues and the Storm as they navigate through their respective challenges.
