Crisis sparks opportunity: Wallabies’ rising stars step up without trio

Harry McLaughlin-Phillips has made a strong case for a Wallabies debut, showcasing his potential with a standout performance that highlighted his growing confidence and maturity. The Queensland Reds five-eighth, stepping into the starting role due to the absence of injured players Carter Gordon (knee) and Tom Lynagh (calf), delivered what could be the most composed display of his young career, leading his team to a 30-21 victory over the Brumbies.

McLaughlin-Phillips’ running game has always been his key strength since joining the Reds in 2024, and this match was no exception. He managed 45 metres gained and contributed a crucial line break. However, his extended playing time this season has allowed him to evolve into a more strategic player, capable of managing the flow of the game effectively.

Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt was in attendance and has previously praised McLaughlin-Phillips, and this performance further solidified his case. His ability to guide the team through tough moments, including kicking five successful goals, demonstrated his leadership on the field. The Reds’ forwards, led by Lukhan Salakaia-Loto and Fraser McReight, played a pivotal role in supporting his efforts.

“Last week hurt a bit for sure, but the boys crystallised what they wanted to get out of this week. It wasn’t complex, this is the Brumbies, and we had to stand up,” said Reds coach Les Kiss.

He noted that the team’s focus was on maintaining good traction throughout the game, especially in the first half and early in the second. “Every week it’s just about making sure we improve things in the way the boys commit to. We’ve kept it pretty un-complex, we said ‘make sure we get the right things right so our combinations can build and continue to grow.’”

McLaughlin-Phillips’ five starts this season have significantly accelerated his development after a stagnant year last season when Tom Lynagh was performing well. The injuries to Gordon and Lynagh have also opened the door for Western Force star Ben Donaldson to push for a Test recall, although both Queensland players are expected to return before the Super Rugby finals.

McLaughlin-Phillips’ willingness to take on the defensive line could make him a compelling bench option, as he has outscored his counterpart in the Brumbies, Declan Meredith. Meanwhile, the instincts of his halfback, Kalani Thomas, will ensure any return for Wallabies No.9 Tate McDermott from a serious hamstring injury sustained last year will need to be earned.

“It’s really pleasing to see Harry’s strong form and growth in tactical acumen. The truth is we see our halfbacks as game controllers as well,” said Kiss.

Thomas was instrumental in securing a 17-7 halftime lead for the Reds. His quick and flat pass set up Salakaia-Loto for a try, and his close-range grubber in the final moments of the half led to Josh Flook scoring. Flook’s leadership and defensive skills were vital, with Kiss highlighting his impact off the ball.

“We certainly lean on Flooky for a few things: his leadership, his presence on the field, and with the ball. Probably his biggest influence is without the ball, his defensive nous,” said Kiss.

Thomas, who earned his first Wallabies cap on last year’s Spring Tour, could be in line for an opportunity when Schmidt names his squad for the upcoming match against Ireland on July 4. With McDermott still uncertain about his return, the stage is set for Thomas to make a significant impact.

This win was crucial for the Reds, who were struggling to stay within the top six. Their remaining four games include matches against teams below them on the ladder, and their recent record against the Chiefs in Brisbane suggests a chance to secure a home final.

Despite losing four lineouts in quick succession during the second half, Kiss remained confident, noting that when they finally executed correctly, it led to the match-winning try by Seru Uru. This performance highlights the Reds’ resilience and potential for a strong finish to the season.
