The hallowed turf of Chepauk, usually a cauldron of roaring crowds and electrifying cricket, bore witness to a different kind of magic on a recent Sunday evening. With no IPL match on the cards and the players off the field, the stadium was transformed into a stage for a more reflective and deeply emotional occasion. This was not about the present gladiatorial contests, but a heartfelt tribute to the legends who laid the very foundations of the Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) illustrious present.
CSK Unveils Inaugural Hall of Fame: Raina and Hayden Honoured
In a landmark event aptly named ‘Roar ’26’, CSK officially established its first-ever Hall of Fame. The honour of being the inaugural inductees fell to two titans of the game: the ever-reliable Suresh Raina and the formidable Australian opener, Matthew Hayden. This ceremony resonated deeply with the legion of CSK fans who have experienced the franchise’s remarkable journey, marked by seven major trophy wins, including an impressive five IPL championships and two Champions League T20 titles.
Suresh Raina: ‘Mr. IPL’ and the Heartbeat of the Yellow Army
Suresh Raina’s name is inextricably linked with the success of CSK, second only perhaps to the iconic MS Dhoni. From 2008 to 2021, Raina was more than just a player; he was the pulsating heartbeat of the team. His unwavering commitment and consistent brilliance saw him contribute significantly to four IPL titles and two Champions League triumphs. Over his tenure, he amassed a staggering 5529 runs for the ‘yellow army’, earning him the affectionate moniker ‘Mr. IPL’. For the vast majority of his career, Raina was a CSK stalwart, his loyalty unwavering even during the team’s two-season suspension.
Known affectionately as “Chinna Thala” (Little Brother) by the adoring Chepauk faithful, Raina commands immense respect and a devoted following within the stadium’s walls. His explosive 234-run performance in the 2014 Champions League, which saw him crowned Player of the Tournament, is a testament to his big-match temperament. His ability to deliver under pressure made him an indispensable asset during CSK’s golden eras. Notably, Raina has scored 1593 T20 runs at Chepauk, a tally surpassed only by MS Dhoni himself.
Matthew Hayden: The Aggressive Opener Who Lit Up Chepauk
Matthew Hayden, the destructive Australian opener, left an indelible mark on the IPL during his tenure with CSK. He burst onto the scene in 2009, notching up 572 runs and clinching the Orange Cap with his fearless, aggressive batting style that perfectly complemented his role at the top of the order. His contributions were pivotal in CSK’s maiden championship victory in 2010. Across his three seasons with the franchise, Hayden amassed 1117 runs, solidifying his reputation as one of the most impactful overseas players to grace the CSK jersey. The franchise secured special permission from the Gujarat Titans, where Hayden currently serves as their batting coach, to facilitate his presence at this special event.
A Night of Stars: Past and Present United
The ‘Roar ’26’ event was a masterclass in blending cricketing heritage with contemporary relevance. The evening saw a heartwarming congregation of former CSK luminaries, including the legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, the dependable Michael Hussey, the astute S. Badrinath, and the ever-popular Ambati Rayudu. They shared the stage and the celebration with the current CSK squad, creating a palpable sense of continuity and shared legacy.
The occasion also provided a platform for MS Dhoni to acknowledge and honour India’s recent T20 World Cup triumphs. He extended his felicitations to members of the victorious Indian squad, including Shivam Dube and Sanju Samson, who have also represented CSK. In a poignant moment, young Ayush Mhatre was presented with a special memento for his commendable leadership in guiding India to a remarkable Under-19 World Cup victory, signalling the bright future of Indian cricket and its connection to the CSK lineage. The event served as a powerful reminder of the enduring spirit and rich history of the Chennai Super Kings, celebrating the players who have not only contributed to its success but have also become integral to its identity.
