Dearbhla Mescal: Life’s Curveball Before the Big Leap

A Mother’s Resilience: Navigating Cancer and Empty Nest Syndrome

Dearbhla Mescal, the mother of acclaimed actor Paul Mescal, has bravely shared her personal journey of confronting cancer just as she was preparing for a significant life transition: becoming an ‘empty nester’. Her candid account, delivered recently on a national television program, offered a powerful insight into resilience, family, and the unexpected challenges life can present.

Dearbhla, a retired Garda (Irish police officer), raised three children with her husband, Paul. Their family has seen remarkable success, with their son, Paul Mescal Junior, achieving critical acclaim as an actor, and their daughter, Nell, forging a successful career in music.

The timing of Dearbhla’s diagnosis was particularly poignant. She was on the cusp of retirement from the Garda Síochána, a career spanning many years. Simultaneously, her children were embarking on their own independent lives. Her daughter Nell and son Donnacha had recently relocated to London and New York respectively, while her actor son, Paul, was overseas filming a major project, ‘All of Us Strangers’.

“I was eight months out, about to retire,” Dearbhla recounted to the host. “I had started therapy to say, ‘okay, I’m going to be an empty nester, and I’m going to be retired.'” This period was meant to be a time of reflection and a shift in focus towards a new chapter of life, one filled with the prospect of more personal time and perhaps travel. However, as she was mentally preparing for this significant change, life delivered an unforeseen and profound blow.

While grappling with the emotional adjustments of her children leaving home and her impending retirement, Dearbhla received a diagnosis of multiple myeloma. She admitted that she hadn’t been feeling entirely herself in the months leading up to the diagnosis.

“There was this really crazy time in my life, where six months before I started to feel ‘I’m really not well,’ I was starting to feel unwell,” Dearbhla explained. This subtle but persistent feeling of being unwell was the first indication that something more serious was at play.

She vividly recalled a moment that underscored the abrupt shift in her reality. “I have one little story that I always remember: I’m on centre court [at Wimbledon] — well I’m not, obviously, on centre court, I’m watching on centre court — and literally seven days later, I was going into the sixth floor in the Beacon Hospital, which is oncology.” The stark contrast between the leisurely enjoyment of a sporting event and the urgent reality of entering a cancer treatment ward highlights the swift and disorienting nature of her diagnosis.

Dearbhla then faced the daunting task of informing her children about her illness. “And I was now a person with cancer, and I had to figure out how I was going to tell my kids…” She acknowledged the widespread impact of cancer, noting, “we now know that it’s one-in-two [who] are going to be affected by cancer, so it’s not a unique story.” Nevertheless, the personal act of sharing this news with her children, who were geographically dispersed and pursuing their own ambitious careers, presented a unique set of emotional challenges. “Donncha had just gone to New York, Nell was in London, Paul was filming All Of Us Strangers… yeah.”

Despite the immense personal struggle, Dearbhla expressed profound gratitude for the care she received. “Cancer is just one of those things that happens to us,” she stated, her tone reflecting acceptance. “I was incredibly, incredibly lucky. I happened to end up in a hospital that was the centre of excellence for my type of cancer, multiple myeloma.” This fortunate circumstance undoubtedly played a crucial role in her treatment and recovery.

Her positive outlook and current state of health were evident as she shared, “I’m in remission, so life is good.” This declaration brought a sense of hope and triumph, underscoring her strength and the effectiveness of her medical care.

Viewers were deeply moved by Dearbhla’s appearance, with many taking to social media to express their admiration. Comments highlighted her down-to-earth nature, with one person remarking, “Lovely down to earth woman….just an Irish Mammy like most of us.” Another lauded her strength, stating, “Such an incredible woman.” The resemblance between Dearbhla and her famous son was also noted, with one viewer observing that Paul is “the image of his mam.”

Dearbhla’s journey serves as a powerful testament to the human spirit’s capacity to endure and find joy even in the face of adversity. Her recently published book, “Finding Joy,” offers further insights into her experiences and her philosophy on navigating life’s challenges.
