WWE and Lucha Libre AAA: A New Era of Wrestling
Before Night 1 of WrestleMania 41, WWE made a significant move by acquiring Lucha Libre AAA. This acquisition has led to the launch of a weekly show on Saturday nights and several Pay-Per-View events (PLEs) that feature both WWE and AAA talent. Among the notable figures involved are current AAA Mega Champion Dominik Mysterio, El Grande Americano, and “The Original” El Grande Americano.
Several AAA wrestlers have made appearances on WWE PLEs and weekly programming, including El Hijo Del Vikingo, La Parka, Mr. Iguana, and Psycho Clown. Additionally, a major free agent named La Catalina recently debuted with much fanfare, generating excitement among fans. WWE wrestlers have also benefited from this collaboration, with Dominik Mysterio being one of the most prominent examples.
Mysterio has become a fan favorite in AAA, but El Grande Americano and “The Original” Americano hold even more significance in their programming at the moment. Their rivalry has escalated to new heights within AAA, with intense brawls that have made their storyline extremely important. The feud has grown so heated that a mask vs. mask match was announced for May 30, 2026, at Noche de los Grandes, where one of them will be unmasked.
Dominik Mysterio Retains After More Chaos
“The Original” Americano sought an advantage over his rival by challenging Mysterio for the AAA Mega Championship on the May 11 episode of Raw. If he were to win, it could alter the outcome of the upcoming mask vs. mask match, potentially putting the AAA Mega Championship on the line.
Mysterio faced a tough challenge, especially after a backstage attack by Finn Balor on JD McDonagh left him to fight alone. This was also his first defense of the AAA Mega Championship outside of AAA, making a loss on Raw particularly embarrassing.
The match began with both competitors trading equal amounts of offense. Americano shoved Mysterio into the corner but was met with a boot to the face before any damage could be done. Mysterio then took control, getting Americano up on the turnbuckle and starting to chop him. He extended his arm, prompting the referee to break the hold. Mysterio then got Americano onto the edge of the apron but couldn’t deliver the German suplex.
Americano retaliated with an elbow and a knee to Mysterio’s back, sending him crashing to the ground. Mysterio managed to get back into the ring and tossed Americano into the turnbuckle, followed by a dragon suplex that resulted in an unsuccessful pin.
Before anything else could happen, old enemies arrived, causing a distraction for the referee. Bravo and Rayo Americano created chaos, followed by El Grande Americano hitting the referee on the head. Mysterio delivered a Tornado DDT but couldn’t secure the cover. Bruto and Julio Creed joined the fray, starting a fight with Bravo and Rayo.
“The Original” Americano attempted to put Mysterio into an ankle lock but was distracted by Americano. He also tried to unmask Americano before their match, which proved to be a poor decision.
Mysterio eventually connected with the 619 and delivered the frog splash for the match victory, retaining the AAA Mega Championship. For Mysterio, this means he gets to keep the championship for another day.

Anticipation for the Next Chapter
AAA fans were eagerly awaiting Mysterio’s return to their programming to determine his next challenger. However, for “The Original” Americano, the loss was not just a setback but an added insult, as Americano continued to antagonize him ahead of their upcoming mask vs. mask match.
While “The Original” Americano may be angry now, this could serve as additional motivation for him to win their upcoming match. The rivalry between the two masked luchadors is set to reach new heights, with the stakes higher than ever. Fans can expect an intense and dramatic showdown when they finally face off in the mask vs. mask match.
