DJI Osmo Pocket 4P: A New Direction for Compact Gimbals
DJI is set to introduce a new variant of its popular Osmo Pocket series, the Osmo Pocket 4P, which is expected to launch globally. This model marks a significant shift from previous iterations by focusing on enhanced zoom capabilities and greater flexibility in shooting options.
The Addition of a Telephoto Lens
The most notable feature of the Osmo Pocket 4P is the inclusion of a dedicated telephoto camera. While it retains the same 1-inch primary sensor found in the standard Osmo Pocket 4, the addition of a secondary 3x telephoto lens represents a major upgrade. This change is particularly impactful for a compact gimbal camera, as it addresses a key limitation of earlier models.
Previous versions of the Osmo Pocket relied solely on a wide-angle lens, which posed challenges when capturing portraits, tighter shots, or cinematic scenes. These situations often required digital zoom or cropping, which could compromise image quality. The introduction of the telephoto lens changes this dynamic.
Early hands-on footage from China suggests that the telephoto lens has an equivalent focal length of around 70mm and may use a larger 1/1.5-inch sensor. Reports also indicate up to 6x “lossless” zoom and a maximum of 12x zoom, making the device more versatile for travel videos, interviews, and street-style photography.
Building on the Standard Osmo Pocket 4
Beyond the telephoto lens, the Osmo Pocket 4P appears to be based on the standard Osmo Pocket 4 model. This version introduced several improvements over the Pocket 3, such as 240fps recording at 4K, enhanced ActiveTrack, and a brighter rotating display. The Pocket 4P retains all these features while adding the new telephoto hardware.
The iconic 3-axis mechanical gimbal remains a core component of the device, continuing to be one of the main reasons users choose the Osmo Pocket series. This feature ensures smooth and stable footage, even in challenging conditions.
Marketing and Availability
DJI has been promoting the device with the slogan “See More, Tell More,” which accurately reflects the model’s intended purpose. The rollout is expected to begin in China before expanding to other markets. DJI has already listed the device in regions like Canada and Mexico, though availability in the US remains uncertain.
Similar to some recent DJI products, the Osmo Pocket 4P is reportedly facing regulatory challenges related to FCC authorization. As a result, it is not currently available on DJI’s US website.
