Dolphins stun Storm with record slump defeat

Melbourne’s Record Streak Continues as Dolphins Stage Remarkable Comeback

Melbourne have suffered a club record seventh consecutive loss as the Dolphins delivered a stunning 28-10 comeback victory. The win marked a significant moment for the Dolphins, who were led by centre Jack Bostock and hooker Max Plath in what was one of their most impressive performances in recent memory.

Bostock, who had not played an NRL match in 10 months, was instrumental in the Dolphins’ success, scoring two tries in his return to the field. His performance was a highlight of the game, showcasing his resilience after recovering from an ACL injury. Meanwhile, Plath delivered a standout display that caught the attention of Queensland coach Billy Slater, raising hopes of a potential Maroons debut for the hooker.

The Storm, despite leading 10-0 late in the first half, struggled to maintain their momentum throughout the match. This marked the sixth consecutive game in which they conceded 24 or more points, highlighting ongoing challenges for the team.

A Week of Challenges for the Storm

On Thursday, the club announced that head coach Craig Bellamy had been diagnosed with an unspecified neurological degenerative condition. Despite this, the players showed determination, playing for their respected mentor. However, it was not enough to secure a win.

Frank Ponissi, the Storm’s general manager of football, addressed the media after the match, praising Bellamy’s leadership. “It’s been a big week for Craig. With respect, he was never coming in (to media), win, lose or draw,” Ponissi said. “He has been through a lot with his family, but the way he coached tonight, you wouldn’t think anything was wrong. He is quite remarkable.”

Bellamy, known for his dedication, continues to focus on coaching and preparing the team for future matches. “He is already working on next week. That’s the great thing about him. He just wants to now focus on coaching and getting us back winning,” Ponissi added.

Injuries and Tactical Adjustments

The Storm faced additional challenges when star half Jahrome Hughes was sidelined due to a concussion. His replacement, Tyran Wishart, suffered an injury in the 13th minute while scoring a try. Wishart managed to burst into a hole and twist his body to get the ball down, but he injured his left ankle in the process.

Wishart had to leave the field, and 26-year-old half Trent Toelau made his club debut. This change disrupted the Storm’s rhythm, adding to the difficulties they faced during the match.

Strong Defensive Efforts and Key Moments

Despite the setbacks, the Storm displayed resilience in the first half. Fullback Sua Faalogo scored one of the great individual tries of the season, covering 85 meters to leave Herbie Farnworth behind and then outpacing Dolphins fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow with a sprint and a clever move.

In the 39th minute, the hosts scored another try through winger Selwyn Cobbo, thanks to a slick cutout pass by Plath. Tabuai-Fidow was sin-binned early in the second half for holding down Faalogo, but the Storm managed to avoid conceding any points.

“I was really proud of that. I thought overall we defended great,” Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf said. When Tabuai-Fidow returned, he set up Jamayne Isaako in the corner, and the winger converted his own try to level the score at 10-all.

Bostock and Plath Shine

Dolphins centre Bostock, returning after an ACL recovery, showcased his speed and skill by sprinting diagonally from 20 meters out to score after a brilliant run by Plath. Bostock added another try when he snaffled an Isaiya Katoa bomb.

“It is great to have Jack back. He wants to be a centre. I see him as a centre and he will be our centre going forward,” Woolf said. Plath’s performance was particularly impressive, with his play catching the eye of Queensland coach Billy Slater and raising expectations for a potential Maroons debut.

“Max is built for it,” Dolphins co-captain Tom Gilbert said when asked about Plath’s Origin credentials.

The Road Ahead

The Storm are currently languishing in 16th position and appear set to miss finals football. With challenges both on and off the field, the team will need to regroup and find a way to turn their fortunes around. For the Dolphins, this victory marks a positive step forward as they continue to build momentum in the competition.
