Drivers face post-race penalties after F1 result altered by stewards’ probe

F1 Drivers Face Post-Race Penalties Following Miami Grand Prix

Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen have both received post-race penalties following the Miami Grand Prix, which saw Kimi Antonelli secure a victory and Oscar Piastri claim a podium finish. The race marked a significant moment in the F1 world championship, with Antonelli extending his lead after a strong performance for Mercedes. He finished ahead of McLaren’s Lando Norris and Piastri, who secured his second consecutive podium.

Antonelli, a 19-year-old Italian driver, made history by winning his first three races in a row from pole positions. This achievement includes victories in China and Japan, solidifying his dominance in the championship. His success has been a standout feature of the season, showcasing his talent and consistency.

Piastri, an Australian driver, delivered a remarkable drive on Sunday, making up multiple positions from seventh place. His performance included a daring overtake of Leclerc late in the race, highlighting his skill and determination. Despite a difficult start to the season, Piastri’s recent results indicate a positive trend in his performance.

Leclerc Faces Investigation and Penalties

For Leclerc, the race was not as successful. He came under investigation for three separate incidents. On the final lap, he hit the wall and drove his car in an unsafe manner, leaving the track multiple times and gaining an advantage. Additionally, he had a run-in with George Russell on the last hairpin.

The stewards investigated these incidents and imposed a 20-second time penalty on Leclerc, which dropped him from sixth to eighth place. This change in position resulted in Lewis Hamilton and Franco Colapinto being promoted to sixth and seventh respectively.

Leclerc also lost four championship points due to the penalty. Originally, he would have received eight points for a sixth-place finish, but instead, he settled for four. The stewards stated in their official report: “The fact that he had a mechanical issue of some sort did not amount to a justifiable reason. We accordingly impose a Drive Through penalty on Car 16, given the number of times the car left the track and gained an advantage.”

Verstappen Also Penalized

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was also penalized for a pit exit breach. Stewards found that he crossed the white line separating the pit exit and the track when re-joining the circuit. This five-second penalty would have dropped Verstappen below Leclerc had the Monégasque not received his own penalty. As a result, Verstappen retained his fifth-place finish and 10 championship points.

Reactions from Drivers

Antonelli expressed his satisfaction after the victory, stating, “This is just the beginning. I’m going to enjoy this one and then get straight back to work because Canada is in two weeks’ time.” His focus remains on the upcoming races, showing his commitment to maintaining his strong performance.

Piastri, on the other hand, was pleased with his second consecutive podium finish. He remarked, “The pace seemed more encouraging again today. I had to make a few overtakes, obviously, and it was a pretty late charge late in the race, but it just very, very tricky around here, especially in these conditions. But clearly we’re a step closer in performance once again. So that’s nice to see.”

These penalties and performances highlight the competitive nature of the F1 season, with drivers continuously striving for improvement and consistency. The outcomes of the Miami Grand Prix underscore the importance of careful driving and adherence to regulations, as even minor infractions can significantly impact a driver’s standing in the championship.
