Eric Dane’s Final Red Carpet Glow, Months Before His Passing

Beloved Actor Eric Dane Dies at 53 After Brave Battle with ALS

The entertainment world is mourning the loss of acclaimed actor Eric Dane, who passed away at the age of 53 following a courageous, yet ultimately unsuccessful, fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Known for his charismatic roles in popular television series, Dane’s passing was confirmed on Thursday afternoon.

Dane’s most recent public appearance occurred on June 18, where he was seen looking healthy and happy on the red carpet alongside his girlfriend, photographer Janell Shirtcliff. The couple, who had been dating since 2022, attended the premiere of the Amazon Prime Video series Countdown at the Harmony Gold Theater in Los Angeles. At 42, Shirtcliff stood by Dane’s side as they presented a united front, just eight months before his untimely death.

The actor was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, in April 2025. This progressive neurodegenerative disorder significantly impacted his physical abilities, leading to a loss of function in his dominant right arm and legs as the illness advanced. Despite the immense challenges posed by his condition, Dane demonstrated remarkable resilience, continuing his work in the crime drama Countdown. He portrayed Special Agent Nathan Blythe in the 13-episode series, which, despite its cancellation last October after just one season, showcased Dane’s dedication to his craft.

Jensen Ackles, a co-star on Countdown, spoke highly of Dane’s presence on set. He described Dane as bringing a “beautiful, quiet leadership” that was “incredibly needed” during the creation of the series. Ackles told E! News in June that this leadership was “so beneficial to the process of creating a team both on and off camera.”

While Dane was in a relationship with Shirtcliff, his final days were spent “surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife Rebecca Gayheart and his two beautiful daughters Billie, 15; and Georgia, 14.” His family emphasised that his daughters “were the center of his world.”

In a heartfelt statement, Dane’s family revealed his commitment to raising awareness and supporting research for ALS. “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight,” they shared. “He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

Dane’s estranged wife, Rebecca Gayheart, had previously dismissed her divorce petition in March of the previous year, following seven years of separation.

A significant moment in Dane’s advocacy came during his last live virtual appearance on December 2 for the nonprofit advocacy organisation I AM ALS. During this candid conversation, he confessed his struggles with his health condition.

“I have no reason to be in a good spirit at any time, on any given day,” Dane admitted during the virtual event. “I don’t think anybody would blame me if I went upstairs in my bedroom, crawled under the sheets, and spent the next two weeks crying. I think it’s imperative that I share my journey with as many people as I can because I don’t feel like my life is about me anymore.”

He elaborated on the personal battle this entailed: “And it’s something I’ve had to wrestle with because I’m a pretty selfish person, and I’d love for my life to be all about me, but I just can’t — I don’t think I’d be able to move forward if that were the case.”

The average life expectancy for individuals diagnosed with ALS is typically two to five years after the onset of symptoms. However, advancements in FDA-approved medications and therapies, including physical and speech therapy, can potentially slow the progression of the disorder.

Prior to his role in Countdown, Dane concluded his portrayal of Cal Jacobs, a closeted real estate agent, in the third season of Sam Levinson’s acclaimed drama Euphoria. The eight-episode season premiered on HBO Max on April 12. The upcoming season of the drug-fueled drama was set to feature new additions to the cast, including Sharon Stone, Rosalía, Marshawn Lynch, and Kadeem Hardison.

The San Francisco-born actor also dedicated time to other projects in the past year, filming the six-episode series Kabul and contributing to one episode of Brilliant Minds.

Eric Dane’s career breakthrough came with his iconic role as plastic surgeon Mark ‘McSteamy’ Sloan in the ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, a role he embodied from 2006 to 2012. His talent and presence left an indelible mark on television audiences.
