Essendon names CEO successor as Vozzo stays in key role

Essendon Appoints New CEO for the 2026 Season

Essendon has officially announced its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) ahead of the 2026 season, with Tim Roberts taking over from Craig Vozzo. Roberts, who has been a key figure in the club’s leadership, will begin his new role on Monday.

Roberts joined Essendon as a director of the club’s board in 2022 and was appointed vice president in September of last year. His appointment marks a significant step in the club’s leadership transition, following Vozzo’s decision to step down in December due to family reasons. Vozzo has since returned to South Australia but will continue to play an important role as a list and management consultant for the club.

This is Essendon’s fourth CEO in three years, highlighting the ongoing changes within the club’s executive structure. However, the appointment of Roberts signals a commitment to stability and long-term growth.

Vision for the Future

In his first official statement as CEO, Roberts expressed his enthusiasm for the role and his vision for the club. “The platform for success has been created by those who have gone before me, and I am proud to take on this challenge and continue Craig Vozzo’s incredible contribution,” he said.

Roberts emphasized his deep connection to the club, recalling his childhood as a supporter. “The Essendon I grew up barracking for were league leaders on and off the field, proud of the red and black and seen as a fierce, courageous, confident and bold club. That’s my vision for this club, and along with Welshy, our Board and leadership, we are determined to reclaim that space.”

He outlined a clear path forward, stating that Essendon should be consistently competing for finals and premierships. “We need to be embracing and impactful in our community and commercially sustainable,” Roberts added.

Focus on People and Performance

Roberts also highlighted the importance of people in achieving success. “During my business career, I learned that people are the cornerstone of your success and footy clubs are no different,” he said.

He praised the talent across the club, including the Executive, coaches, staff, and playing groups. “Our focus is to get the best out of everyone, being galvanised and executing our club strategy,” he said.

Craig Vozzo’s Continued Role

Despite stepping down as CEO, Vozzo will remain involved with the club in a different capacity. He will play an integral role in the Bombers’ list management strategy, salary cap management, and recruiting.

Vozzo spent 12 years at West Coast in various roles, including contracts, list manager, and head of football, before his tenure as CEO at Essendon. His experience and expertise make him a valuable asset to the club.

President’s Comments

Essendon president Andrew Welsh welcomed Vozzo’s continued involvement. “After Craig made the decision not to renew his contract as CEO and move back to Adelaide, we are rapt to have secured his services and bolstered our football department in the List Management space,” Welsh said.

Welsh praised Vozzo’s reputation within the industry, stating, “Craig is held in the highest regard in football circles, and to keep him involved continues to highlight our targeted approach of having the best people in specific areas throughout the Club.”

He also expressed excitement about the future, saying, “Craig has been a highly sought-after individual within the industry and made a significant impact at the Club in his time as CEO. We are excited to have secured his services in this new role, supporting the club, including Tim, and we look forward to his impact in a very important space for us.”

Conclusion

With Roberts at the helm and Vozzo continuing to contribute in a strategic role, Essendon is positioning itself for a strong future. The club’s leadership is focused on rebuilding its identity, strengthening its community presence, and ensuring long-term success both on and off the field.
