Geely’s New Four-Wheel Ute for Australia
Geely, the Chinese automotive giant, is making significant strides in preparing a four-wheel ute for the Australian market. This new offering is expected to be more robust and heavy-duty compared to the car-derived Riddara ute available overseas. According to Geely Australia CEO Alex Gu, the brand is actively working on this project, with the potential for the ute to hit showrooms as early as 2028 or 2029.
The ute is set to feature plug-in hybrid power, aiming to compete directly with models like the BYD Shark 6 and GWM Cannon Alpha. While Geely does not plan to offer a pure internal combustion-engined version, there are plans to explore hybrid and/or plug-in hybrid technology. This could include both diesel and petrol options, providing flexibility for different consumer needs.
Potential Powertrain Options
One of the most exciting developments is the possibility of a new 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V6 hybrid powertrain. This engine is developed by Horse, an engine joint-venture between Geely and Renault. It has the potential to deliver up to 400kW and 700Nm with the help of an electric motor. This setup could provide the performance needed for off-road capabilities while maintaining efficiency.

Geely has recently unveiled a new architecture tailored for off-road-focused vehicles. However, Gu mentioned that the ute might differ in certain aspects, such as suspension. The rolling off-road chassis showcased at the Beijing motor show last month featured independent suspension front and rear. Yet, Gu suggested that if load carrying is a priority, the Australian model could adopt a more rugged live rear axle.
Focus on the Australian Market
Gu emphasized that the Australian pickup will be an off-road vehicle, highlighting the need for specific research and development. “Because we don’t have these historic platforms. But we will study and create to satisfy that ute market,” he said. This approach underscores Geely’s commitment to localizing its offerings for the Australian market rather than simply importing existing models.

When asked about the potential inclusion of the recently revealed turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 hybrid setup in the ute, Gu indicated it was possible. He also mentioned that future generations could explore other options, such as diesel plug-in hybrids, depending on the findings from their studies.
Strategic Market Positioning
Geely sees Australia as a strategic market globally. “This is reliant on localisation. Not to bring the Chinese model into this market, we need to create a local model,” Gu explained. The brand is leveraging its technological advancements, such as using two or four electric motors to enhance horsepower, as seen in the Zeekr models.

Gu was also optimistic about the use of Geely’s forthcoming ‘plug-less’ hybrid technology. He claimed it could achieve fuel consumption levels superior to what Toyota currently offers. This innovation could position Geely as a strong competitor in the Australian ute market.
Timeline and Future Outlook
Regarding the timeline for the ute’s release, Gu stated that it would be “two to three years.” This indicates that while the project is still in the developmental phase, the company is committed to bringing this innovative ute to Australian consumers soon.
Geely’s efforts to tailor its products for the Australian market reflect a broader strategy of localization and technological advancement. With a focus on hybrid and plug-in hybrid technologies, the brand aims to meet the unique demands of the Australian ute market while staying competitive in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
