Gemma Numan’s Paralysis After Surgery: Left Hand Unusable

Synth-Pop Icon Gary Numan’s Wife Reveals Paralysis After Spinal Surgery

Gemma Numan, wife of the renowned synth-pop artist Gary Numan, has shared a heartbreaking health update, revealing she has been left paralysed in her left arm following a rare complication from spinal surgery. The 57-year-old underwent a multi-level discectomy at the end of last year to address a herniated disc, but the procedure resulted in an unexpected and devastating outcome.

Gemma detailed her ongoing recovery on Instagram, posting a photo of herself and Gary, 67, enjoying a walk in London’s Kew Gardens. “Still recovering [from] the sadder outcome of left arm paralysis after my multi-level discectomy,” she wrote, referring to the operation performed on December 11th. A multi-level discectomy involves removing damaged or herniated discs from various parts of the spine to alleviate pressure on nerves. While paralysis is an exceptionally rare complication, it remains a known risk due to the intricate proximity of the surgery to the spinal cord and nerve roots.

In a separate, more personal post, Gemma shared a photograph of herself resting in bed, candidly explaining that the paralysis occurred immediately after the surgery on her cervical spine. “Paralyzed left arm straight away! It’s one of the sad things that can happen,” she admitted. While physiotherapy has allowed her to regain some movement in her lower arm and biceps, she reported a complete lack of sensation and control in her shoulder and the surrounding area.

The situation has been compounded by the fact that Gemma is left-handed, making everyday tasks significantly more challenging. She recounted a poignant moment when she purchased a small travel paint kit to lift her spirits, only to be overcome with emotion upon realising she couldn’t use it effectively. “Get back, cried and realised I can’t use it cos I’m left handed,” she shared. “So I tried by turning the paper round all the time! It’s s*** but that’s with my lead hand which is now not really working with any control.”

The health struggles come at a difficult time for the Numan family. Gemma, who shares three daughters with the “Cars” hitmaker – Raven, Persia, and Echo – has been unable to return to their family home in Los Angeles since September. The couple arrived in the UK on December 4th, just a week before Gemma’s surgery. This period of intense personal challenge follows the recent death of Gary’s younger brother, John Webb, in November. Gary received the devastating news while performing on stage during his tour.

Gemma’s spinal surgery is the latest in a series of medical procedures she has undergone since August. She revealed that she has had three operations in total and still faces at least one more. The physical and emotional toll has been immense. “I miss my animals so much it makes [me] feel sick. Gary has looked after me here in UK the whole time. And I Facetime babies. But animals are just missed,” she expressed. She added, “No one can ever understand how s it is and not glamorous plus my health s my animals have lost months with me.”

She also took the opportunity to express her profound gratitude to Gary for his unwavering support and for putting his career on hold to care for her. “He has been bored s***less with so much looking after me and it’s all my fault he’s fallen behind on all things Numan again to look after me,” she wrote, highlighting his dedication amidst her ongoing health crisis.

Gemma’s current spinal issues are the culmination of years of escalating health problems that she first disclosed last summer. In August, she was preparing for five cervical discs to be removed and replaced, but postponed the surgery until after Gary’s tour concluded in December. At that time, she mentioned that a temporary spinal procedure had provided relief for eight months before “the neck pain and migraines came screaming back.”

Beyond her spinal concerns, Gemma has been diagnosed with several other serious conditions:

  • Nutcracker Syndrome: A rare vascular disorder where the left renal vein is compressed, necessitating a potential kidney autotransplantation, a complex procedure to reposition her own kidney.
  • May-Thurner Syndrome: Another vascular condition affecting veins in the pelvis. Gemma theorised that this syndrome may have been the cause of a blood clot that led to a mini-stroke she experienced in early 2024.
  • Pelvic Congestion Syndrome: A further vascular condition contributing to her complex health profile.

Reflecting on her multiple diagnoses at the time, she stated, “I’m a broken nightmare! Hopefully getting fixed!”

In mid-2024, Gary Numan spoke about a particularly “scary time” for the family when Gemma was treated for a heart arrhythmia that caused her pulse to spike to dangerously high levels. The Numan family continues to navigate these significant health challenges, with Gemma’s resilience and Gary’s devoted care at the forefront.
