Gen Z’s Surprise Snack Sensation: Fried Eggs Top Ryvita for Young Aussies
Forget the protein shakes and pricey powders, a new culinary trend is sweeping across Australia, proving that sometimes, the simplest things are the most satisfying. Research has revealed a surprising favourite among Gen Z men when it comes to their go-to Ryvita topping: the humble fried egg. This classic breakfast staple, often associated with a hearty Full English, has been embraced by a new generation as a quick, protein-packed snack solution.
The study, which surveyed 2,000 individuals, found that nearly four in 10 Gen Z men (aged 18-30) are turning to fried eggs to fuel their day, making it their number one choice for pairing with crispbread. This preference for fried over boiled eggs suggests a generation prioritising speed, taste, and a significant protein hit over meticulously prepared meals.
The Rise of the Egg-cellent Snack
While Gen Z men are leading the charge, the trend isn’t exclusive to them. Gen Z women are also getting in on the action, with almost a quarter (23%) opting for Ryvita with fried eggs. They’re not stopping there, often jazzing up their creations with a colourful array of toppings like tomato (47%), avocado (44%), and cucumber (42%).
This phenomenon extends beyond Gen Z, with Millennial men also embracing the egg-and-crispbread combination. Almost one in five (19%) Millennial men are stacking their Ryvita with eggs, a figure that slightly outpaces their female counterparts in the same age group, where 14% are doing the same.
This evolving snacking landscape highlights a broader shift. Ryvita, once perhaps perceived as a basic crispbread, is being reimagined by younger adults as a versatile base for low-effort, yet highly satisfying, culinary creations. By adding eggs, a dash of hot sauce, or other bold flavours, they’re transforming it into something that feels both indulgent and functional, delivering on taste and nutritional value.
Beyond the Basics: Flavour and Functionality
Despite the surging popularity of fried eggs among younger demographics, boiled eggs still hold the crown as the nation’s overall favourite Ryvita pairing, with approximately one in six Australians (16%) declaring them their ultimate choice. Fried eggs come in a close second at 14%, a statistic significantly bolstered by the preferences of younger men.

Eggs are a nutritional powerhouse, naturally rich in protein and packed with essential vitamins like D and B12. When combined with Ryvita crackerbreads, which are high in fibre and offer a source of protein across their diverse ranges like Multigrain, Sesame, and Pumpkin & Oat, the result is a simple yet flavour-packed alternative to traditional protein supplements.
However, the trend is not just about protein. Data also indicates that Gen Z and Millennials are experimenting with trending flavour combinations that go beyond the classic runny yolk. They’re incorporating elements like hot sauces and sweet chilli to combat any lingering perceptions of crispbreads being bland, transforming them into a quick and nutritious snack hack.
This culinary movement mirrors the growing popularity of “protein-maxxing” and “fibre-maxxing” trends on social media platforms. Here, younger adults are actively seeking out simple, nutritious snacks that don’t compromise on taste, proving that healthy eating can be both enjoyable and accessible.
A Spokesperson’s Delight
A spokesperson for Ryvita expressed their enthusiasm for these evolving consumer habits. “We absolutely love seeing younger eaters transform Ryvita into flavour‑packed snacks that go way beyond the crispbread they grew up with,” they stated. “From perfectly runny fried eggs to innovative chilli‑loaded toppings, people are choosing combinations that are big on taste, big on protein, and brilliantly easy. It’s precisely how Ryvita should be enjoyed… simple, satisfying, and full of personality.”
This shift signifies a dynamic evolution in how Australians, particularly younger generations, approach their snacking habits. It’s a testament to creativity, a desire for convenient nutrition, and a willingness to embrace unexpected flavour pairings, turning a simple crispbread into a canvas for delicious and health-conscious meals.
