Gerrard’s Persuasive Advice That Lured Salah From Liverpool

Mohamed Salah’s Decision to Leave Liverpool

Mohamed Salah has shared how a conversation with former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard played a significant role in his decision to leave the club. The Egyptian forward is set to depart in the summer, a year before the end of his contract, after spending nine years at Anfield. His choice to move on was influenced by Gerrard’s advice that he should leave on his own terms.

Salah, who will turn 34 in the summer, insists that he is still in good physical condition and believes he can continue to contribute meaningfully to a team. He emphasized that he hasn’t become old overnight and is still capable of offering a lot to his next club.

Despite a muscle injury that will see him miss Sunday’s trip to Manchester United, Salah remains optimistic about returning before the end of the season. He is expected to play his final match against Brentford on 24 May.

“For sure, the injury is fine,” he said during an interview with TNT Sports. “I will hopefully be back.”

Although Salah has only scored 12 goals this season out of his 257 for Liverpool, compared to 34 in the 2024-25 season when he was named PFA Player of the Year for the third time, he feels he is not finished yet.

“I feel good,” he added. “Body-wise I feel alright. I didn’t become old overnight. Last season I had this incredible season, I think I have a lot to give still and I will see what is the best for me.”

A Tumultuous Season and Personal Reflections

Salah’s future at Liverpool was called into question when he was dropped by head coach Arne Slot in November. This led to an explosive interview where he accused the club of throwing him under the bus, resulting in his omission for the Champions League trip to face Inter Milan.

Since then, Salah has returned to the team and expressed that he feels the decision to stay through the season was the right one. He mentioned that the season was tough for everyone involved and that he doesn’t want to elaborate further.

However, he revealed that Gerrard visited him in January and helped him come to a decision about his future. Their conversation was private, but Salah acknowledged the importance of Gerrard’s input.

“People didn’t know you came to my house, we had a good conversation,” Salah said. “You said your opinion and I really appreciate it. I am glad I am leaving now through the big door. That is something you mentioned to me, just leave on your terms, I still remember those words. I am happy about it.”

Looking Ahead

Salah admitted that the events of the season have made him realize it’s time to move on. He emphasized that he still feels physically capable of contributing and that the experiences over the years have paid off.

“I feel good,” he said. “I played many games this season and I played the African Cup of Nations. I didn’t decide yet what I am going to do yet, I have a lot of options, good options. Physically I feel fine, I feel what I did over the years paid off, I feel good. I will see what is best for me.”
