Gould Endorses Knights’ Rising Star as Blues Surprise Pick

Fletcher Sharpe’s Rapid Ascent into State of Origin Conversations

Fletcher Sharpe’s meteoric rise in the world of rugby league has placed him firmly in the conversation for State of Origin selection. The 22-year-old Newcastle Knights star is being touted as a potential bolter for the Blues ahead of this year’s series, thanks to his versatility and impressive performances on the field.

Sharpe has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting utility players in the competition. His ability to play across the entire backline, combined with his elite skills as a fullback and five-eighth, makes him a valuable asset for any team. Despite only making his NRL debut last season, he has already become a key figure in the Knights’ squad.

The attention on Sharpe comes from a respected figure in the rugby league community, Gus Gould, who has spoken about the young talent’s potential. During an episode of ‘Ask Gus’ on Wide World of Sports, a listener asked Gould whether Sharpe was in contention for State of Origin selection.

Gould confirmed that Sharpe should be considered for the Blues, especially if the team plans to have six players on the bench. He highlighted Sharpe’s ability to cover multiple positions, stating:

“He covers a whole swag of positions on the bench. He’s a good player, really good player.”

Gould also shared a personal anecdote about how he first noticed Sharpe’s talent years before his NRL debut. While watching junior representative football, he saw the young fullback playing in a Harold Matts game, which was part of the U16s competition at the time. He was sitting with the club’s recruitment manager, Peter Sharp, and was immediately impressed by the player’s style.

“I said (to Peter Sharp), ‘Are you related to this kid?’ He said, ‘I don’t know’. I said, ‘Can you go and find out?'” he laughed.

This early recognition of Sharpe’s potential has been proven correct, as the young star has already made a significant impact in the NRL. In just 33 games, he has scored 24 tries in first grade. This season alone, he has appeared in seven matches, scoring two tries, providing four try assists, making 94 tackles, and averaging 85 running metres per game.

Why Sharpe Is Making Waves

  • Versatility: Sharpe can play across the backline, making him a flexible option for coaches.
  • Early Recognition: His talent was spotted years before his NRL debut, indicating long-term potential.
  • Impressive Stats: With 24 tries in 33 games, Sharpe has already shown his ability to contribute significantly to his team’s success.

As the State of Origin series approaches, all eyes are on Sharpe and whether he can make the cut for the Blues. His rapid development and consistent performances suggest that he is not just a rising star but a player who could soon be a key figure in the competition.
