Gritty Giants Add to Bombers’ Struggles

Gutsy Comeback Seals Victory for GWS Giants

GWS coach Adam Kingsley praised his team’s resilience after an injury-plagued Giants side staged a remarkable 14-point comeback to defeat Essendon at ENGIE Stadium on Saturday. The victory marked a significant moment for the Giants, who managed to overcome a two-point deficit at the final break and secure a 16.7 (103) to 13.11 (89) win.

The match was a rollercoaster for both teams, with Essendon leading by as much as 26 points in the third quarter. However, the Giants showed incredible determination, scoring five goals to two in the final quarter to turn the game around. This win lifted GWS to 13th place in the league, marking their fourth victory of the season despite losing four players to injury earlier in the week, including star goalscorer Jesse Hogan, who was sidelined with a hip injury.

One of the standout moments of the game came from defender Connor Idun, who made a desperate smother to deny Essendon’s Jayden Nguyen a certain goal. Kingsley highlighted the importance of such moments, saying:

“I’m not sure our grit has ever been questioned. That epitomises what many of our players do in big moments. Now we’d certainly like to be not in those moments where we need a massive smother to save a goal, but the opportunity’s there. It was Connor’s turn this week. It’ll be Jack Buckley next week, or it’ll be Jayden Laverde.”

Key Performances and Player Contributions

Essendon’s Jake Stringer kicked three goals, while Max Gruzewski, who stepped in for Hogan, added two. Meanwhile, Giants recruit Jayden Laverde impressed with 11 intercept possessions, playing a crucial role in defense during his first match against his former team.

Despite the loss, Essendon coach Brad Scott expressed pride in his young side’s effort. The Bombers remain second last on the ladder after failing to secure their second win of the season. The injury to first-year player Dyson Sharp only added to their challenges.

Archie May and veteran Peter Wright each kicked their third goals of the game in the final term, while 20-year-old defender Archie Roberts led the game with 42 disposals. In his 100th match, Sam Durham took eight clearances, showcasing his experience and leadership.

Scott acknowledged the team’s progress, stating:

“We’re impatient like all of our fans are, but we want to make sure that we’re building a solid foundation. It was never going to be any quick fixes, that we were going to come in and just snap our fingers and get it done. As a coach, you don’t expect 18-year-olds to be the backbone of your side, but very quickly they are becoming that.”

Match Highlights and Key Moments

Xavier Duursma, an Essendon youngster, booted two majors in the tight opening quarter but missed a chance for a career-best third goal as the Giants took a four-point lead into halftime. GWS skipper Toby Greene outworked Andrew McGrath in front of goal to kick off the second quarter, but the home side managed only one goal in the term, allowing Essendon to take control.

The Giants trailed by 15 points at halftime, marking the second time this season the Bombers have led at the main break. This follows their round-six loss to Gold Coast.

Looking ahead, Essendon faces a tough challenge against a red-hot Fremantle side aiming to equal a club-record run of nine wins. Meanwhile, GWS will travel to play West Coast in their next fixture.
