Gyokeres Delivers Masterclass as Arsenal Thrash Tottenham
Former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott has lauded striker Viktor Gyokeres, declaring his performance in the Gunners’ dominant 4-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur as “the best performance” he has ever witnessed from the Swede. Gyokeres was in scintillating form, netting a crucial brace that cemented Arsenal’s commanding win.
His first goal, a superb strike that re-established Arsenal’s lead shortly after halftime, showcased his clinical finishing. The 27-year-old then put the icing on the cake in stoppage time with his second, and Arsenal’s fourth, of the afternoon. This memorable goal saw him shrug off the challenge of Archie Gray before curling an accomplished finish into the net.
While the goals are undoubtedly the headline-grabbing moments, Gyokeres’ overall contribution was exceptional. The summer signing was instrumental throughout the match, demonstrating a commanding presence and a keen understanding of the opposition’s vulnerabilities. He also played a vital role in the build-up to Arsenal’s third goal, highlighting his effectiveness beyond mere goal-scoring.
Following the final whistle, Gyokeres received widespread acclaim from Sky Sports pundits. Walcott’s assessment of the display as “the best performance I’ve ever seen from him” underscored the striker’s impact.
“Not just the goals, I felt today that he really commanded that position,” Walcott elaborated. “He knew where the weakness was in that Tottenham team. It was from minute one, he showed everything that we expected him to bring to this league.”
Walcott further praised Gyokeres’ finishing ability, particularly his second goal. “What I really like is this finish [for the second goal], which he’ll do every day in training, it’s fantastic. It was the link play [too], he brought the best out of the others around him.” He also acknowledged the significance of this performance for a key summer signing, stating, “It was a really important moment for him, [he was] a massive signing, and then want to give him time.”
Fellow pundit Jamie Redknapp echoed this sentiment, noting that Gyokeres had “bullied” Tottenham’s defence. Redknapp added, “[It was] a big day for him, he was excellent, the touches, I am very pleased for him because he has had a lot of stick.”

The brace means Gyokeres has now scored more goals across all competitions in 2026 than any other Premier League player. A significant portion of his 15 total goals for the Gunners this season have come in the current calendar year, with eight finding the back of the net. He currently stands as the club’s leading scorer in the league for this term, with eight goals to his name.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was equally effusive in his praise for his star striker. Arteta described the performance as the “best, the most complete” display so far from the 27-year-old.
“When we need him most and that is when big players and big clubs have to stand up when you are needed,” Arteta commented. “He was outstanding today, I thought. There have been glimmers of it every week but today, I thought he was fantastic.”
The impressive 4-1 victory propels Arsenal five points clear at the summit of the league standings. However, Manchester City remain a threat, possessing a game in hand heading into the next round of fixtures. Pep Guardiola’s side are scheduled to face Leeds, while Arsenal will take on Chelsea on Super Sunday.
