Navigating the Minefield of Modern Dating: Monica Barbaro’s Insights from the Silver Screen
The world of dating can often feel like a minefield, fraught with awkward encounters and the pressure to present a perfect, curated version of oneself. For Oscar nominee Monica Barbaro, this sentiment is not just a relatable observation but a central theme explored in her latest cinematic venture, Crime 101. Starring alongside Chris Hemsworth, the film delves into the often-cringeworthy reality of first dates, offering a valuable lesson, especially as Valentine’s Day approaches.
Barbaro, who has captivated audiences with her roles in Top Gun: Maverick and earned an Oscar nomination for A Complete Unknown, recently shared her perspective on the intricacies of modern romance. Speaking from London, she emphasised the paramount importance of authenticity in relationships.
“I think authenticity is number one,” Barbaro stated. “I think if you’re shrouding parts of your personality behind trying to project some sort of perfectionistic image of yourself, you’re gonna find yourself disappointed in that relationship.”
She elaborated on the sheer exhaustion that comes with maintaining a façade. “Because I think people who can’t be their authentic selves, ultimately, it’s an exhausting experience to try to pretend you’re somebody else for so long. So yeah, I think show up.”
In Crime 101, Barbaro portrays Maya, a character whose strength and directness in handling a particularly awkward first encounter with Hemsworth’s character, Davis, deeply resonate with the actress. Davis’s attempts to impress Maya spectacularly backfire, leading to a scene that Barbaro believes holds significant lessons for viewers.
“I really admire the way Maya navigates their first date,” Barbaro confided. “Because she’s sort of like, ‘I don’t want to waste anyone’s time. This doesn’t feel really right, it’s not my thing – it might be your thing, that’s fine, but I’m gonna go’ and I love that.”
The actress highlighted Maya’s courage as a key takeaway. “I love that she has the strength to do that. So, take a note from Maya, I guess.” This sentiment underscores the film’s exploration of genuine connection versus superficial pretence in the dating arena.
While Barbaro’s professional star has been on a meteoric rise, her personal life, particularly her relationship with actor Andrew Garfield, has been kept largely out of the public eye. The couple was first rumoured to be together in early 2025, with their initial sightings at a Los Angeles party in January and later at a London play in February.
However, their first official public appearance together didn’t occur until July, when they were photographed attending Wimbledon. Garfield, known for his intensely private nature, has previously stated his firm stance on discussing his personal life. In an interview with Esquire magazine, he declared, “I won’t ever, speak about or confirm or deny anything about my personal life with anyone, ever.”
This commitment to privacy is a stark contrast to the public scrutiny often faced by celebrity couples. Garfield has previously been linked to several high-profile individuals, including Rita Ora, Emma Stone, and Phoebe Dynevor. His last publicly acknowledged relationship was with spiritual advisor Dr Kate Tomas, whose representative confirmed their separation in October 2024, noting they had “broke up months ago.”
Before her relationship with Garfield, Barbaro was reportedly linked to American actor Connor Tillman. The contrast between the public’s fascination with celebrity relationships and the individuals’ desire for privacy remains a constant, often challenging, dynamic in Hollywood.
Barbaro’s advice, gleaned from her character Maya and her own reflections, serves as a timely reminder for anyone venturing into the complex world of dating: embrace your true self. The pursuit of authenticity, even if it leads to a less-than-perfect first impression, ultimately fosters more genuine and sustainable connections. As the film Crime 101 suggests, the most valuable lesson might just be the courage to be yourself, unapologetically.
