Enhancing Safety on Incheon Bridge: New Railings to Prevent Tragic Falls

Officials from the Ministry have confirmed that the structural integrity of the bridge will not be compromised by the installation of these safety railings. A representative stated, “We have confirmed that installing safety railings does not pose any issues to the bridge’s safety,” and reiterated the timeline for installation in the second half of next year.
This development follows previous efforts to bolster safety on the Incheon Bridge, which have unfortunately proven insufficient in preventing the tragic incidents. Past measures have included the placement of oil drums along the roadside and the deployment of personnel from the bridge operator to monitor situations, particularly those involving vehicle stops. However, these interventions have faced criticism for their limited effectiveness in averting further accidents.
The stark reality of the situation is underscored by the fact that since the Incheon Bridge opened in 2009, a total of 86 lives have been lost on its expanse up to the present day.
