NSW Blues Face Major Challenges Ahead of State of Origin Opener
The NSW Blues are set to face a difficult task as they prepare for the opening match of the State of Origin series on May 27. Two key players have joined an increasing number of injured athletes, forcing the team to reassess their strategy and selection.
During a thrilling victory over the Brisbane Broncos on Saturday night, the Sydney Roosters suffered a significant setback. Mark Nawaqanitawase is expected to undergo surgery after sustaining a severe ankle injury during the game. The 25-year-old had been making a strong case for an Origin spot following his impressive performances for Australia during last year’s Ashes tour.
Roosters coach Trent Robinson confirmed the diagnosis post-match, stating: “It’s syndesmosis, he looks like he’ll have an operation.” This injury adds to the challenges the team is already facing.
Compounding the situation, veteran player Angus Crichton is also in doubt for the first game due to a knee injury. The 30-year-old, who is set to move to rugby union at the end of the season, has damaged his medial collateral ligament (MCL). Robinson mentioned that they are currently assessing the extent of the injury and that Crichton is undergoing scans.
The Blues’ depth is being tested across the league. Canterbury’s Jacob Kiraz remains sidelined for several weeks with a knee issue, while Manly superstar Tom Trbojevic is ruled out for at least another six weeks. Penrith Panthers powerhouse Brian To’o is a certainty to lock down one wing, leaving a contested race for the opposite flank.
South Sydney’s Campbell Graham and Parramatta’s Josh Addo-Carr are firmly in the frame for the spot. However, several other exciting prospects are demanding attention: Manly’s Tolu Koula, Wests Tigers’ Sunia Turuva, and Penrith’s Tom Jenkins, who currently leads the NRL’s try-scoring tally.

His Panthers teammate, Casey McLean, has international experience on the wing for New Zealand and adds to the mix of options. “If the phone call arose I wouldn’t turn it down,” McLean said to NRL.com if he got the call from Daley.
With the game one squads set to be named in just a fortnight, Blues coach Laurie Daley faces a massive selection headache as he attempts to build a winning team from an overflowing injury list.
Key Players in the Running
- Campbell Graham (South Sydney): A strong contender for the wing position, known for his consistent performances.
- Josh Addo-Carr (Parramatta): Offers speed and versatility, making him a valuable asset.
- Tolu Koula (Manly): Brings blistering speed and big-game experience to the table.
- Sunia Turuva (Wests Tigers): Provides a fresh perspective and potential impact on the field.
- Tom Jenkins (Penrith): Leads the NRL in try-scoring, showcasing his scoring ability.
- Casey McLean (Penrith): International experience adds depth to the options available.
Challenges Ahead
The Blues are dealing with a growing list of injuries, which complicates the selection process. With several key players unavailable, the coaching staff must carefully evaluate the best combination to ensure a competitive lineup. The pressure is on Laurie Daley to make the right decisions, as the team aims to secure a strong start in the State of Origin series.
As the countdown to the opener continues, all eyes will be on the Blues’ preparations and how they manage to overcome these challenges. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the team’s success in the upcoming matches.
