Craig Goodwin’s World Cup Hopes Under Threat
Craig Goodwin’s aspirations for the World Cup have taken a major hit as the Socceroos veteran is set to miss up to three months due to a groin injury. The 34-year-old was forced off the field just 25 minutes into Adelaide United’s intense 3-2 loss to A-League Men leaders Newcastle at Coopers Stadium on Sunday evening.
Following further medical evaluation, Adelaide United confirmed that Goodwin will not require surgery and is expected to be out of action for approximately 10–12 weeks during his rehabilitation process. This means he will be sidelined until at least late April, ruling him out of Australia’s send-off games against Cameroon in Sydney on March 27 and Curacao in Melbourne four days later.
These matches are the final friendlies before coach Tony Popovic intensifies preparations for June’s tournament, which means Goodwin will miss this crucial opportunity to prove himself. The set piece specialist had been a vital asset under Graham Arnold and played a key role in Australia’s impressive performance at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
However, Goodwin has lost favor under Popovic’s management. Players like Nestory Irankunda and Riley McGree have been preferred options on the left flank, with Nishan Velupillay and Martin Boyle also competing for spots in the squad.
Riley McGree Emerges as Key Player
Riley McGree, on the other hand, is emerging as one of Australia’s most important players for the World Cup. His performances with Middlesbrough have been instrumental in helping the club reach the top of the Championship and take a significant step towards a return to the Premier League.
The 27-year-old was named man of the match after scoring a goal and providing an assist in the 2-1 away victory over Sheffield United, which propelled Middlesbrough to the top of England’s second tier. The two leading teams in the Championship, currently Middlesbrough (61 points) and Coventry City (59), are in line for automatic promotion to the Premier League, although there are still 15 games remaining in the season.
McGree, who typically plays as an inverted left winger for the Socceroos, is one of Australia’s most dangerous and creative players when fit. He had been in excellent form before a December hamstring injury kept him out for nearly a month. Since returning, he has seamlessly picked up where he left off.
His match-winning performance on Tuesday morning (AEDT) followed an assist for the winning goal against Norwich City in the previous game. Middlesbrough took the lead in the 19th minute when McGree set up Tommy Conway for the opener. The Australian doubled the lead when Hayden Hackney’s shot struck the post, and McGree was the first to react, heading the ball into an empty net.
“Probably positions I don’t find myself in as much as I’d like to – following in shots and getting easier goals,” McGree said in an interview with Middlesbrough’s club media. “So it was good to get one today – with my head as well.
“Six in a row – it’s not easy to do but in this league especially. So really proud of everyone.”
Impact on Australia’s World Cup Campaign
With Goodwin sidelined and McGree in top form, the focus now shifts to how Popovic will manage his squad ahead of the World Cup. The competition for places is fierce, with several players vying for a spot in the starting XI.
As the Socceroos prepare for the biggest stage in international football, the performances of players like McGree could be pivotal. His ability to create opportunities and score crucial goals makes him a key asset for the team.
With the World Cup just around the corner, every player’s performance will be under scrutiny. For Goodwin, the road back to fitness is critical, while for McGree, maintaining his current form will be essential to securing a place in the final squad.
