IPL 2026: Spin Legend Praises Virat Kohli After RCB’s GT Defeat

A Masterclass in Cricketing Strategy

Former Indian off-spinner R Ashwin has shared his insights on a recent cricket match, highlighting the brilliance of Virat Kohli during a tense encounter. Despite the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s loss to the Gujarat Titans, Kohli’s performance stood out as a testament to his skill and mental strength.

One of the most memorable moments of the game occurred in the second over when Kohli scored 21 runs. The talismanic batter took Kagiso Rabada for five consecutive fours in his first over. Ashwin was particularly impressed by how Kohli managed to hit through point off the front foot, a technique he doesn’t often employ.

“He hit fours on both sides of point. That was my favourite because Virat doesn’t hit there from the front foot. He opened the face of the bat while hitting,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Rabada, however, had the last laugh as he dismissed Kohli off a short-pitched delivery in the next over. This wicket triggered an RCB collapse, with Jason Holder stepping up to deliver a crucial spell. Holder picked up 2/29 in his four overs and was awarded the Player of the Match. Ashwin acknowledged that while Holder’s performance was significant, it was the dismissal of Kohli that proved to be the turning point in the game.

“The way Rabada came back, used the angle and got height on the bouncer, it completely changed the game. Holder’s spell was match-changing as well, but that particular wicket completely turned the game around,” he added.

Ashwin also pointed out the psychological advantage that Kohli holds over bowlers. He noted that many bowlers tend to be on the back foot when facing Kohli, a situation that the veteran batter is well aware of.

“Virat has played for so many years. So, obviously, a lot of the bowlers go on the back foot against him, even those who have played with him. Virat Kohli knows this too. The game is more about the mind than skill, and Virat is a little ahead in that,” he said.

Key Moments from the Match

RCB were bowled out for 155 in their innings. The Gujarat Titans started their chase strongly, with captain Shubman Gill scoring an impressive 43 runs off just 18 balls. Jos Buttler followed suit with a quick 39 off 19 balls, but the Titans struggled to maintain their momentum.

Despite losing regular wickets, the Titans managed to reach the target with four wickets in hand. Rahul Tewatia remained unbeaten on 27, providing a solid finish to their innings.

Conclusion

The match highlighted the importance of mental strength and strategic play in cricket. Kohli’s ability to adapt and take control of the game, even under pressure, showcased why he is considered one of the greatest players of all time. Ashwin’s analysis further emphasized the intricate dynamics between batsmen and bowlers, underscoring the mental aspect of the game.

As the season progresses, such performances will continue to shape the narrative of the tournament, with players like Kohli setting the standard for excellence. The balance between skill, strategy, and mental resilience remains a critical factor in determining the outcome of high-stakes matches.
