Fulham Snaps Losing Streak with Convincing Win Over Sunderland
Fulham has ended a frustrating three-match losing streak in the Premier League, securing a vital 3-1 victory away at Sunderland. The Cottagers, with a brace from Raul Jimenez, proved too strong for the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light, marking a significant turning point in their campaign.
The first half offered little in the way of clear-cut chances, with neither goalkeeper being significantly tested. However, the period was marred by several injury concerns for both sides. Sunderland saw Nordi Mukiele and Jocelin Ta Bi forced off, while Fulham’s Kevin had to be substituted just before the halftime whistle.
The match truly ignited after the break, with Fulham taking control. The deadlock was broken in the 54th minute when Raul Jimenez headed home, finding the bottom corner after a well-placed delivery. Just seven minutes later, the Mexican striker doubled Fulham’s advantage from the penalty spot, a decision confirmed by VAR after a shirt pull on Calvin Bassey by Brian Brobbey.
Sunderland managed to pull a goal back with 14 minutes remaining through Enzo Le Fee, who converted a penalty after Dan Ballard was fouled by Ryan Sessegnon. However, Fulham quickly re-established their two-goal cushion in the 85th minute. Alex Iwobi sealed the victory, slotting the ball into the far corner after being set up by Harry Wilson, who had driven upfield following a cleared Sunderland corner.
This result makes Fulham only the second team to defeat Sunderland on their home turf this season, a testament to their resilience and tactical discipline. Conversely, Regis Le Bris’ side has now suffered three consecutive league defeats, a worrying trend for the Black Cats.
A Look Back at the First Half Action
The opening exchanges were relatively subdued. Sunderland’s Nilson Angulo showed some early promise, making a darting run down the left flank, but his low cross into the box was dealt with by Sander Berge. Fulham responded with attempts from Kenny Tete, whose shot deflected off Omar Alderete, and Kevin, who skewed an effort wide from the left.
Premier League debutant Jocelin Ta Bi was involved in a brief spell of action for Sunderland, sending a corner towards Lutsharel Geertruida, a 12th-minute replacement for the injured Mukiele. Geertruida’s subsequent shot was blocked. Fulham also went close when Emile Smith Rowe’s neat pass found Ryan Sessegnon, but his curling effort sailed over the crossbar.
A quick turnover saw Fulham regain possession from a deep Sunderland free-kick. Kevin managed to dispossess Angulo and set up Harry Wilson on the break, but Trai Hume was on hand to clear the danger behind for a corner.
Sunderland faced another setback with the forced substitution of Jocelin Ta Bi, with Romaine Mundle coming on. Noah Sadiki tested Fulham’s resolve with a long-range strike that was held by goalkeeper Bernd Leno. The Cottagers were dealt their own blow just before halftime, with Kevin being replaced by Oscar Bobb.
Second Half Surge and Clinical Finishing
The second half started with an early opportunity for Sunderland. Geertruida won the ball outside the box and played Mundle through, but the winger fired his shot wide of the mark.
Fulham began to assert their dominance. Alex Iwobi saw his shot cleared by Hume, but from the resulting corner, Iwobi’s delivery was met by Raul Jimenez. The striker expertly moved away from his marker and flicked a header into the bottom corner, breaking the deadlock in the 54th minute.
The VAR intervention seven minutes later proved crucial. Brian Brobbey was penalised for pulling Calvin Bassey’s shirt in the penalty area. Raul Jimenez stepped up and calmly slotted the penalty into the corner, doubling Fulham’s lead.
The introduction of Granit Xhaka as one of three substitutes in the 71st minute signalled Sunderland’s intent to find a way back into the game. Their efforts paid off five minutes later when Enzo Le Fee converted from the penalty spot.
However, Fulham showed their mettle by restoring their two-goal advantage. A Sunderland corner was cleared to Harry Wilson, who launched a quick counter-attack. He played a pass into Alex Iwobi, who made no mistake, finishing neatly into the far corner to secure the three points for Marco Silva’s side.
