Kia’s Tasman Mystery Solved

The ute market in Australia is experiencing a peak, and both new and established models are facing challenges. According to the Australia Chief Executive Officer of Kia, Damien Meredith, the ute market appears to have reached its peak, with a flat result in the first quarter of this year indicating that growth will be difficult to achieve.

This situation poses significant difficulties for the Kia Tasman, which was launched last year with an ambitious sales target of 20,000 units per year. However, it is currently on track to sell fewer than 5,000 units in 2026, a far cry from the segment-leading Ford Ranger and the strong-selling Toyota HiLux and BYD Shark 6.

Kia has been making efforts to improve the performance of the Tasman, with plans to revamp the model to better compete against the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, and BYD Shark 6. The brand is pulling out all the stops to ensure the new look dual-cab ute can capture sales from these top contenders.

Official reports suggest that a major redesign is coming for the Kia Tasman, with the goal of transforming the once-criticised design into a more competitive offering. This change is expected to help the Tasman better fight against the Ford Ranger, Toyota HiLux, and BYD Shark 6.

Meredith expressed concerns about the Tasman’s performance, stating that they are aware of the challenges. When asked if the Tasman would still be available in three years if sales did not improve, he simply replied, “I believe so.”

Despite being critically acclaimed for its performance, the Tasman ute faces several issues that are holding back its success. Meredith noted that while the interior is highly praised, the exterior design is polarising, with some people loving it and others disliking it. This has had an impact on its overall appeal.

He also mentioned that the competition in the market is fierce and has become more dramatic than it was when the Tasman was planned six years ago. While the company planned as well as possible, the current level of competition is intense, and the vehicle’s design is a factor in its performance.

Kia is currently the third best-selling car brand in the nation this year, but it acknowledges the need to do more to get the Tasman into more hands. Meredith admitted that they have fallen short of their goals and are aware of the facts.

Recent events over the past 35-40 days have not helped, but Meredith emphasized that the company cannot use these as excuses. The focus remains on making the Tasman a more successful model in Australia than it currently is.

A facelift to give the Tasman a more conventional styling is still at least a year or two away, according to previous reports from CarsGuide. However, there are other strategies the brand can employ to boost sales.

As a volume seller, Kia may introduce sharp discounts for the dual-cab ute in the coming months to stimulate demand and attract fleet buyers. The Korean brand is also engaging with Australian owners to gather feedback on how to improve the product.

Additionally, Kia has revealed plans for a plug-in hybrid dual-cab ute for the US market, which could potentially replace the slow-selling Tasman. Meredith stated that the brand is open to all types of powertrains in its global range.

“We’re open to everything, but first and foremost we’ve got to make what we’ve got a success.”
