Kingsley: Giants’ Cadman caution

GWS Giants Adopt Cautious Approach with Aaron Cadman Following Lower Back Concern

Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants are adopting a patient and measured approach to the recovery of their highly-touted forward, Aaron Cadman. The former Pick 1 has been sidelined with a “tricky” lower back injury, with coach Adam Kingsley confirming he will miss at least the next fortnight.

Cadman experienced pelvic soreness after a training session last weekend, leading to his current unavailability. Coach Kingsley emphasised the club’s commitment to a gentle rehabilitation process, especially given the current injury concerns impacting the squad.

“I know there’s a lot that’s been made of our injuries,” Kingsley stated. “It is a tricky injury, it’s lower back. One that we think we’ve settled, but we’re never quite sure. It can settle faster than what you can expect, too. We’ll be pretty gentle with him, we’re not going to push him at this part of the season, to get back before he needs to.”

The injury has come as a surprise to the club, particularly as Cadman had completed a full and seemingly successful pre-season. “It’s probably one that got sprung at us over the last week, we weren’t expecting it. He has done a full pre-season and has been quite good in it, so it’s a bit of a surprise one. But we take them as they come, and hopefully they don’t come too often,” Kingsley added.

Initially, there was speculation that Cadman might be in contention for selection in Round 2 against St Kilda. However, considering the Giants’ recent history with players returning from injury only to suffer reoccurrences or new setbacks – a situation that has befallen key figures like Brent Daniels and Stephen Coniglio in previous seasons – a conservative strategy for the key forward appears to be the most prudent course of action. This mindful approach aims to ensure Cadman’s long-term fitness and availability, rather than risking a premature return.

The Giants are set to commence their 2026 season with a home game against Hawthorn at Engie Stadium. The team will be looking to build on their previous performances and establish a strong presence in the league from the outset. The health of their key players, including Cadman, will undoubtedly be a significant factor in their campaign.

Key Considerations for Cadman’s Return:

  • Nature of the Injury: Lower back issues can be notoriously unpredictable, requiring careful management to avoid exacerbation.
  • Club’s Injury History: The Giants have learned valuable lessons from past instances of players returning too soon, leading to prolonged absences.
  • Player Development: As a former top draft pick, Cadman’s long-term development is a priority, necessitating a focus on sustainable fitness.
  • Pre-Season Form: His strong pre-season performance highlights the unexpected nature of this setback, underscoring the need for a thorough recovery.

The club’s medical and coaching staff will be working closely with Cadman to monitor his progress, ensuring that he returns to the field only when he is fully fit and cleared to play without risk. This patient strategy is a testament to the club’s dedication to player welfare and their commitment to building a resilient and successful team for the upcoming season. The focus remains on getting Cadman back to his best, fully prepared for the demands of AFL football, and contributing significantly to the Giants’ aspirations.
