Legend’s Lions Warning: Neale’s Storm Looms

Brisbane Lions Face Crucial Early Season Test Amidst Neale’s Personal Turmoil

The Brisbane Lions, entering the 2026 AFL season as premiership favourites once again, will need to hit the ground running to overcome the significant personal storm surrounding star midfielder Lachie Neale. The club’s ability to navigate this period of disruption, coupled with the inherent challenges of chasing a third consecutive flag, will be a true test of their mettle.

Lachie Neale and his wife, Jules, have been at the centre of a highly publicised personal crisis, following allegations of infidelity. This has led to Neale stepping down as club captain and his family relocating back to Perth, a move that inevitably impacts the 32-year-old’s focus and the team dynamic.

Former AFL player and commentator Matthew Lloyd believes that while Neale is a consummate professional, the early part of the 2026 season will be pivotal. “It sounds like he’s going to be the last year he plays for the Brisbane Lions, to get back to be closer to his family in WA,” Lloyd commented. “He’s a professional. Players are very good at moving on. There’s been a massive storm around him, but players are very good at being able to (focus on the team).”

Lloyd suggests that the primary concern for the Lions isn’t necessarily Neale’s individual performance, but rather the broader post-premiership hangover that can affect any successful team. “The bigger problem for me is the hangover period for some (after a premiership) that some can get comfortable and teams pick you apart and look at what you do,” he explained. “To me, that’s a bigger problem for Brisbane than Lachie Neale. Neale is going to do his thing. He’s going to get 25 to 30 touches a week. They don’t rely on him like they used to. To me, I don’t think it’s going to be a huge distraction.”

The decision to relieve Neale of the captaincy is seen by Lloyd as a pragmatic move. “Taking the captaincy off him was the right move because you lose respect,” he stated, implying that the public nature of the personal issues could have eroded his standing as a leader.

Early Season Performance: The Ultimate Barometer

However, Lloyd cautions that his assessment of the situation being a minor distraction hinges on the Lions’ early season form. “It’s more what happens early in the season. Lachie Neale would want them to be winning games early,” Lloyd emphasised. “Otherwise, we are going to be talking a lot about the distraction.” A strong start to the season, with consistent wins, would undoubtedly help to shift the narrative away from Neale’s personal life and back to the team’s on-field performance.

Veteran journalist Caroline Wilson reports that, from her sources within the club, the off-season pre-season training has been surprisingly smooth, with no outward signs of discord. “You talk to leaders at the club and they swear they haven’t seen (disfunction around the club) and the pre-season has gone smoothly and there’s been no sign of any descension,” Wilson said. “They even say that they haven’t seen any sign of issues between the families and the partners involved. I find that really hard to believe.”

Wilson acknowledges the difficulty of maintaining a positive team culture when such significant personal issues are playing out publicly. “I think when something like this happens, it does put your culture under scrutiny. I’m not saying it’s justified writing stories about young players and their relationships ending, which has been done this off-season,” she commented. “It can’t be easy when your two children are living on the other side of the country. That will be a problem as well.”

Looking Ahead to 2026

The Brisbane Lions are scheduled to commence their 2026 campaign at home, facing the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba during the Opening Round. Neale, who is out of contract at the end of the upcoming season, will be under the spotlight, not only for his on-field contributions but also for how he and the team navigate the lingering effects of a tumultuous off-season. The club’s ability to maintain its elite status and contend for another premiership will be heavily influenced by its resilience in the face of these challenges.
