Sam Draper’s Transition to Brisbane and His Impact on the Lions
Sam Draper, a former Bomber, has quickly become a standout player for the Brisbane Lions, drawing comparisons to another ex-Essendon star who made a similar move to the club. The mercurial Joe Daniher, now retired, was known for his contributions to the Lions’ success in 2024, and Draper is being likened to him for his character and impact.
Draper, a towering 27-year-old ruckman, has wasted no time in making a significant impression at the Lions, both on and off the field. His dedication and team-oriented approach have not gone unnoticed by his teammates.
“Sam’s very similar to Joey,” said Cam Rayner, a key player for the Lions. “He’s really level-headed. It doesn’t look like that from the outside, but a lot of boys have said that. He’s really witty and really invested in the team and looking to learn to get better.”
Rayner highlighted Draper’s ability to integrate into the team and make others better, despite coming from a different club and state. “For someone coming in from a different club and trying something different, moving to a different state … he’s just been really, really good at that, which has been great.”
The now-retired Daniher made the move from Essendon to Brisbane in 2021, and his presence played a crucial role in the Lions’ premiership win in 2024. Draper, too, is expected to have a significant impact on the team.
Lions coach Chris Fagan described Draper as a “gregarious, happy-go-lucky sort of a guy.” Fagan noted that Draper is looking forward to the opportunity to play against his old teammates. “He was a much-loved player at that club, and I imagine he still is. We love him equally here, and he’s having a really great impact for us.”
Fagan also mentioned that Draper was a little slow to get going in the first few weeks but has since picked up his performance. “His ability to make the ball around the ground, his ruck work … our centre bounces have improved out of sight this year. He’s having a big impact.”
In addition to praising Draper, Fagan commended his fellow ruckman, Darcy Fort. “The two of them are a great combination. (Fort) has been terrifically good as well. We’re very fortunate at the moment to have those two guys playing in the ruck and playing well.”
Upcoming Match and Team Dynamics
The Lions are set to face their former club, the Bombers, at Marvel Stadium this Saturday. This match is an important one for Draper, who is expected to receive a warm reception from Essendon fans.
The Lions are aiming for back-to-back wins after a dominant 52-point victory over Adelaide last weekend. They will also be welcoming Cody Curtin to the AFL after Oscar Allen suffered a broken foot, which has kept him out of action for the long term.
On the other hand, the Bombers are in a difficult position, having only won once in seven matches this season. Their recent 77-point loss to Collingwood has left them desperate for a strong performance.
Fagan emphasized the importance of maintaining consistency. “I’ve got total respect of what they are trying to do, and we need to turn up like we did the other night against Adelaide and not be one-week wonders with our pressure.”
