Littler Clinches Poland Darts Open Title in Krakow Thriller
Young gun Luke Littler has added another significant title to his burgeoning career, triumphing at the Poland Darts Open in Krakow. The World Champion secured an impressive 8-4 victory over Dutch counterpart Gian Van Veen in a final that showcased both exceptional skill and dramatic twists.
The encounter was a highly anticipated rematch, with Van Veen seeking redemption for his defeat at the hands of Littler in the World Championship final. This inaugural Poland Darts Open, serving as the season’s opening European Tour event, provided the perfect stage for this compelling clash.
Littler, demonstrating his formidable talent, delivered a masterful performance. He averaged a remarkable 108.07 throughout the match and landed an impressive seven maximums (180s), leaving spectators in awe of his dominant display.

Despite the eventual outcome, the final was not without its breathtaking moments. Gian Van Veen, the Dutch number one, achieved a career-first, hitting his maiden televised nine-dart finish in the championship match. This perfect leg, a testament to his precision, saw him take an early lead. However, this stellar achievement ultimately served as a catalyst for Littler, spurring him on to overcome the deficit and inflict yet another final defeat on Van Veen.
The path to the final for both players was not without its challenges. Littler navigated a strong field, comfortably dispatching formidable opponents such as Ross Smith, Josh Rock, and Chris Dobey en route to the championship match. Meanwhile, Van Veen faced a gruelling battle with Nathan Aspinall before overcoming Wessel Nijman and the world number two, Luke Humphries, to book his spot in the final.
The early exchanges of the final saw both players holding their throws securely, with the first four legs going with serve. However, the pivotal moment of the match arrived in the fifth leg. Van Veen produced a spectacular display of darts, hitting back-to-back 180s before completing the perfect nine-dart leg with a superb 141 checkout. This flawless sequence electrified the crowd and put the Dutchman in front.
Van Veen continued to exhibit clinical finishing, registering two ton-plus outs in quick succession. Yet, the nine-darter seemed to ignite a new level of focus in Littler. Responding with unwavering determination, the young Englishman then proceeded to win the next four legs on the trot, establishing a commanding lead that put him firmly in control of the title.
The Dutchman showed resilience, managing to claw back a leg to narrow the gap to two. However, it appeared to be a case of too little, too late. Littler, seemingly unfazed, recommenced his assault on the treble 20 bed, peppering it with crucial 180s that put him within touching distance of victory.
The final moments saw Van Veen miss three darts at a double, a rare lapse in concentration that Littler capitalised on with ruthless efficiency. He stepped up to the oche and calmly dispatched his chance on double 10, sealing the match and clinching the Poland Darts Open title. This victory further solidifies Littler’s status as one of the sport’s most exciting and talented rising stars.
