Liverpool faces major setback ahead of Man United clash as Isak’s £130m deal hangs in balance

Alexander Isak Faces Uncertain Future for Key Match Against Manchester United

Alexander Isak’s participation in Sunday’s high-stakes clash between Liverpool and Manchester United at Old Trafford is now in serious doubt. This development comes as a major blow to manager Arne Slot and the Reds, who are already dealing with the absence of key players like Mo Salah and Hugo Ekitike.

Isak has reportedly suffered a groin injury during training this week, adding to what has been a challenging first season for the £130m striker since joining Liverpool. The injury will require further assessment through a scan to determine its severity.

This setback is particularly frustrating for Isak, who only recently returned to action after recovering from a broken leg sustained in December. His season has also been hampered by ongoing fitness issues, largely due to the lack of pre-season preparation following his British-record transfer from Newcastle.

Despite these challenges, Isak has shown glimpses of his potential. In last weekend’s match against Crystal Palace at Anfield, he scored the opening goal, demonstrating the form that Liverpool fans hope to see more of. However, this latest injury threatens to derail any progress he has made in building consistency and fitness.

Liverpool and Manchester United are both vying for a spot in the Champions League, with the upcoming match playing a crucial role in determining which team secures third place. If Isak is indeed ruled out, Slot will be forced to make difficult tactical decisions, potentially relying on players like Cody Gakpo or Florian Wirtz in an attacking role.

Salah, who suffered a muscle injury in the victory over Palace, is expected to return before the end of the season. Meanwhile, Ekitike remains sidelined due to a severe Achilles rupture sustained against PSG, which will keep him out for a significant portion of the next season.

The situation has left Slot needing to rethink his strategy for the remainder of the campaign. With key players missing, the manager may have to experiment with different formations and player combinations to maintain competitiveness.

Liverpool’s focus is not just on the immediate future but also on the long-term prospects of the club. The team is hoping that Isak can remain healthy ahead of the World Cup and into the next season, as they rely on him to fill the goalscoring void left by Salah when the Egyptian legend departs this summer.

Earlier in the week, Slot emphasized the importance of ensuring that any potential replacement for Salah would complement Isak’s strengths. He stated:

“Getting the most from Isak is definitely part of thinking about the [Salah] replacement. Since I have been here – and it is the same at a lot of clubs – it is mainly a left footer on the right and a right footer on the left.

“I have seen Alex scoring also a lot from crosses which were played from the right, right footed, Trent Alexander-Arnold crosses, if you want to call them like that. So that is definitely part of how we are looking at things, but we try to sign the best possible available player who we can afford.

“Something else which also happens at certain clubs is: ‘OK, that is the best player in the world in that position, let’s try and get him.’ That is not how we work, we try and sign the best possible player who is available for us.”
